having a go at building a pro2 into an 819
14 mm nips (spoke length 257mm left 259mm right)
can I get away with 258mm ?

Yes that will be fine.
I've just done exactly this rebuilding my rear pro2 & ex823 - I couldnt get hold of 257's quickly enough so plumped for 258 throughout. Whilst initially threading the nipples on I gave the dished side a couple of turns extra, so that from the off it was already starting to dish (a bit like when you fit a shorter spoke).
