Hey, so i have just completed my AM hardtail build and i was wondering whether triple chainrings are still popular for this type of riding? i am running an 8 speed casette. I like the triple as i am used to the security of the granny gear and i like climbing walkers paths/steep alpine slogs. I also however use the big ring occasionaly on the longer decents.
Any reason that you use the big ring? Could you not carry more speed through things rather than have to mash the big ring?
I use the big ring on long descents, but then again i have no skill just now.
Dont quite get why your asking? You use an 8 speed and like to use all 3 rings, good for you. Loads of people still using triples despite what the fashonistas on here will tell you..
If it works for you, do it your way! 🙂
Yup, unfashionable: heavier and less EXTREME!
Works for me though, I've yet to cut my leg off with the big ring too.
I've only just gone 2x9 on my AM fs bike, never really use the big ring, and it's just had big chunk out of my leg!

A.M.E.N. to that. 🙂
Got a triple on mine, to be fair it came with it and its worked faultlessly from day one so i'm reluctant to change for the sake of it....i'll change it when it wears out, had a 2x10 on a previous bike and liked that so i'll probably do that when the time is right....cant say i ever use the big ring, it just doubles up as a bash guard!
Massive fan of Shimano stuff, had the bike a year, bought it mail order semi assembled and thought the gears would be out of synch but they were perfect out of the box (SLX) and nearly a year later havent needed any adjustment, incredible.
It's your bike; ride it your way.
Mleh, i've just gone 2x9+bash on my AM(tm) bike simply because i'm going to Spain with it next week.
Had it 2 yrs and been perfectly happy with the 3x9 SLX system it came with, in fact i'll probably go back to having a big ring when i get back, it was only the fear of smashing the big ring on one of the rock steps that led to me taking it off for this trip - i've not even bothered to put a bigger middle ring on it, 22/32 will be fine for this trip.
If you like how i runs then use it.
I've got a tripple on my road bike too. How uncool am I?
