I wanted to put a geared hub on my hardtail, but it has a 142*12 bolt through.
does anyone know if you can convert an alfine or get a bolt through one?
I see Rohloff do one, but £1k+ I a bit steep.
if anyone has one I would also be interested, or what are the alternatives? looking to build a super easy maintenance bike for winter and commutting.
cheers
you won't be able to convert a normal alfine without some serious engineering.
thought so, do they do a hub for bolt through frames or is a rolloff or nothing?
or are there any other options a all?
do they do a hub for bolt through frames
No
It would prob be easier to try to adapt the drop-outs
or is a rolloff or nothing?
It might just be nothing: Rohloff do not guarantee that it is suitable for all 142 bolt thru frames. The bolt thru version of the Rohloff requires the frame to meet some precise tolerances, which means that the frame would need to be measured first to see if it is compatible.
It may be simpler to consider getting a new frame which would be more suitable for a geared hub, e.g. a Surly with horizontal dropouts or something like a Singular Swift which has an eccentric bottom bracket.
Cool thanks for the info much appreciated
I think an alfine would technically be possible (for someone with the correct skills and access to a miller/lathe). [s]Your frame is sytance x-12, so has inserts both sides[/s] edit just read hardtail not full sus. The alfine axle is long so I think would be long enough to reach through the 142 dropouts. You need anti-rotation washer with the alfine there is no where for these to go but you would need spacers to size the alfine axle up to the 12mm fittings. These could double as anti turn washers. Or you could make new inserts for the frame that acted as anti turn washer. The big question would be whether the alfine axle was too long to allow it to be inserted into both dropouts.
