[Closed] Alfine 8 set up - shifting problem

Not sure which forum I'm most likely to get a response in, but I know a few use the Alfine 8 for MTBing...

Anyway, I've just built up a new wheel around the Alfine 8 speed hub. I've got it setup with the Alfine shifter, however I have trouble shifting from 4th to 5th gear. It shifts up fine through all the other gears, and shifts down fine through all gears. I can get it to shift from 4th to 5th if I am quite aggressive with the shifter, but that doesnt seem quite right... I've got the yellow lines perfectly lined up so I think it's setup right. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Try the lines on the underneath of the hub, normally gives me the better shift – other than that I can’t help you as I’ve not had a problem with mine.

Don't rely on the yellow lines too much - they are a guide, but adjust the cable tension until you get all the shifts working reasonably smoothly.

Re-installed my Alfine 8 last week and it took me about 20 mins riding around and fiddling with the barrel adjuster to get it right - the yellow lines are now close but not completely aligned.

I have an alfine commuter and like the others say, the yellow dots are really a guide to start you off. Mine don't line up completely.

4th to 5th is where it engages the second set of planetary gears so if you're a bit out of adjustment, that's where it shows up first.

I have a radial fracture to my elbow that I'm blaming on an Alfine hub. Slipped out of gear and I went OTB without unclipping one foot. Years of MTB and finally break something commuting to work grrr.

Sorry, no use to the Op. Just saw Alfine and the red mist descended!

As said above they take a little fettleing even after lining up the marks.

Are you using new a cable and outer, they are extremly sensitive to any cable drag so this has to be silky smooth.

Thanks for your help everyone. I spent a bit of time fettling with the cable adjustment as I rode it a few miles and have got it shifting sweetly. Impressed with it so far!
