Anyone able to recommend somewhere suitable for a group of muddy bikers to stay in Exmoor, perhaps near Porlock area?
We normally go to Afan Lodge in January for a weekend of hurty singlespeed fun, but after several years I'd like to offer an alternative to the group.
Requirements, beds for 6-10 souls, bar, decent food onsite (breakfast, dinner), secure bike storage, open fire a big bonus. (Afan lodge take note; cold bikers in January want to sit equi-distance from bar and a roaring fire, not a cold unloved fireplace!)
Would also welcome alternative destinations that:
Are not a bogfest or really exposed/remote (considering we go in late January)
Do not require map reading every 5 minutes
Within 4hrs ish of Brighton
Hilly enough for hurty fun and the occasional sense of humour failure, but not so bad that no one wants to go next year.
(Peaks? North Wales?)
We normally managed about 40 Afan miles/1700m climbing over 3 days and that fair wipes us out ๐

Thanks, that sounds like a contender, especially with the pub opposite. Have you been there yourself?
I've not stayed there but exford is lovely. Often take my kids there to play in the park. I'm sure the pub will be good.
Bump for the morning 'first coffee of the day' crowd

Won't cook for you, but good kitchen and handy for places you can get fed.
Have stayed in the YHA in Exford for a biking weekend, highly recommended. Even allowed us to lock bikes in shed. Linked pub opposite is excellent, and the better of the two in the village.
