[#2140211]

I'm getting a rear wheel built up on a Hope Singlespeed/trials hub and wondered if someone could help me out on a couple of things.

I want to run it as a Q/R rather than the bolts it comes with. Is THIS the kit I need to convert it?

Also......

I want to run an 18T sprocket on the rear, can anyone recommend the best kit to use that will fit straight onto the Hope freewheel?

I apreciate your help and advice with this, I'm unfortunately still a newby on singlespeeding ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Not sure if that axle will fit as the trials hub has a wider shell and narrower freehub body, the answer may be as simple as swapping over to QR end caps, but i'd speak to Hope first(01282851200)

You can use any 18t sprocket that fits a shimano freehub. The hub comes with some spacers but you will need a locking from somewhere

My advice would be to ditch the Hope trials hub and just use a normal pro2. The normal version is significantly lighter than the trials version and saves the hassle of changing the axles over. I think its about 80g lighter, minus the additional 10g or so for the heavier wide base sprocket you have to use. For the pimped out look I run one of these:

With these spacers:

And this lockring:

As you can see, I run a bolt up axle ๐Ÿ™‚

I was thinking of using a standard Hope hub, but I was told that the trials hub was a bit tougher and better for using as on a singlespeed.

I think when they said tougher they were mainly talking about the cassette body being steel.

I waa told that the pickup was better as well.

You need to remove the two end caps from the hub, they just pull out, and buy one of these

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18771

and one of these

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18770

push a QR skewer through and its done, no need to change the axle as its hollow, I did this about a year ago. Hope are super helpfull if you do contact them, I just added a Surly SS sproket from Charlie the bikemonger, the Hope SS hub comes with spacers to get the chainline right.

Edit : Forgot to say you need the Pro 2 QR spacers not the 10mm/SS/Trials, you already have those.

I right in thinking that a Surly cassette fit 18t sprocket and a 12t shimano compatable lockring will work on the Hope trials rear hub? ๐Ÿ˜•

I'm getting myself a bit confused on whether I need 11t and 12t lockring ๐Ÿ˜ณ

That's great, sounds really easy to do; I'll get them ordered ๐Ÿ˜€

The trials hub has a way of letting you know when you are slacking ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm ordering a 18t Surly cassette sprocket and the 2 Hope QR spacers.

So is it just the 12t lockring I need now?

Can't remember what I used on mine, it was in the spares box, If you're ordering the Surly sproket from Charlie, he should beable to help.

Right, just been down the bikeshed and had a look, I'm using an 11t lockring, although it looks a bit small up against the spacers, been using it for just over a year with no problems. It looks like a 12t would be neater though, may have to get one now - bugger, wish I hadn't looked ๐Ÿ˜€

I've just done some digging on the net and most folks are recommending a 12t with a singlespeed spacer kit.

I also found this on ebay which reckons that a 12t is the ideal size.

i drilled mine out and fitted one of the superstar 10mm qrs, works a treat. The alloy freehub on the standard hubs would last about five minutes with a singlespeed cog on it. The surly ones are about the best, closely followed by the onone groove armada cogs, both have a wide base
