Has anyone on singletrack ever upgraded the old afr shock and brain on a 120mm 2006 M5 S Works.
It's shock length is 196.9mm by 44.5 stroke.
Any advise much needed:)
I replaced a 2005 FSR 120 shock, probably doesn't help you though!
Went from the standard 190x47 to a 200x50. All effects you'd expect from the longer shock were experienced.
I bought a 200x50 rp23 but the bottom of the piston shaft won't clear the Horst link even with offset bushings.
won't clear the horst link?
You're doing something wrong ..
The rocker link on the other hand
I asked tftuned about something to fit my 193.7/41.3mm '07 SJer FSR carbon and in the end opted to have the afr serviced again ..
(the options they suggested would have meant the rockers smashing the back of the seattube or losing/gaining something like 1/2" travel/BB height). Since I reckon if they'd suggested offset bushes it might have been possible to make something work
(on paper) you ought to be able to get a 200x50mm shock internally spaced down to 44.5mm** stroke and then an offset bushing* or two** to offset 3mm to get the i2i to 197mm
*as above there could be issues around the rocker link mounting?
**The thing with SJer FSR's (pre 2008) will be making sure the rockers bottom out at the right point, making sure they can't hit the back of the seattube/'ladies legs'. Might take a couple of calculations just to be sure you're don't go buying something that not fit properly
I don't see why you would want to replace it, mine has been excellent since it was given a proper service.
Send it off to Stendec to get it done and it's cheaper than most of the big companies but his work was excellent.
Somouk - thanks for the contact name. Spoke to Dave at stendec and he no longer services them due to reliability issues etc. he's a really helpful chap though and is looking into a solution.
Sorry James it must be the rocker link then. It has the words "hollow link" on it.
Try Simon @ Loco turning. He did a great job on my RP3!
