Hi all,
I'm considering getting an On-One Slot Dropout Inbred but am a little off-put by my previous experience of a slotted rear end (Litespeed's Obed with swappable dropouts). I used a QR with chain tugs and also a QR-type axle with a hex-key bolt on one end - neither proved solid enough that when I got out of the saddle the axle wouldn't slip in the dropout, forcing me to get off and retighten.
Suffice to say that started dampening my enjoyment of singlespeed. I know I could go down the EBB route, but I really like the look and price of the new Inbreds, so if I can conquer the slot issues I'd like to go down that route.
Does anyone know if the Inbreds come with chain tugs? I emailed 'em but no reply.
Hope to hear your two-pennies-worth.
Cheers
Los
what sort of chain tugs were you using?
Chaintugs aren't included, but should work if done right. Some chaintugs work better than others with a QR axle.
Ones that came supplied with the frame, with two screws pulling each one back; the force of the axle slipping forward bent the drive side screws though!
I've been using XT QR with drive-side only On-one chaintug on steel 29er slot-dropout and ti version. I have never had the wheel move in over 12 months - at all.
On-One tugs seem pretty flimsy in my, admitedly limited, experience. However the BMX/fakenger fraternities have a wealth of tugs for under a tenner so a more robust alternative should be available.
I use a surly tuggnut on my Ti29 (pretty much the best out there and never had a problem, and they have an insert specifically for use with QR) when running singlespeed/rohloff. Obviously if running dérailleur then you only need one if you want to play with the wheelbase.
If a tugnut is used correctly then there's little to go wrong, even if one might not look as beefy as another.
Ive used On-One tuggnuts (the twin bolted black things, but these are only for bolted axle use really) on bolted axle pompino trackends, again with no problems for thousands of miles.
If you're having a problem, maybe you're not using them correctly?
Cool, thanks for that. Not sure there is an incorrect way of using tugs, but if there is, I'll find it...
Had a discussion with Brant once, he suggested that most slipping isn't from the drive side, it's actually the disc on the back. (hence the reason he moved the mounts to the chain stays on the later models of Inbreds. Any hoo, I've pretty much always used bolt up axles rather than QR's on SS rear hubs, much betterer
cheers Nick, can you get decent bolt-up axles the same diameter as QR skewers? I used allen key ends which were better but not perfect. If I could find a standard size axle with a bolt you could really tighten with a spanner that sounds better
My Genesis iO frame has small diameter threaded bolts through the dropout which you use to push the axle back. Simpler than chain tugs.
My Inbred SS rear wheel moves due to the disk brake force.
Using two on-one tugs and bolted axle ??
Might try the tugg-nuts.

I don't get this. As i said I run drive-side only On-one chain tug and xt qr on a singlespeed bike. It never moves!
a tugnut wont help with brake induced forces as they pull the disc side of the axle backwards, not the drive side forwards.
Do your bolt sup tighter! 🙂
