The lad's just getting into his balance bike, and is an absolute speed demon on it.
I'm getting fed up of running alongside it, and TBH he stops so regularly that being on a bike gets a bit frustrating (plus I can't leap off a bike to prevent him from certain doom manouvres very quickly).
I was thinking a scooter would allow me to bomb alongside him, but leap off when needed!
What's good/cool/reliable in the scooter world? NOT a micro scooter, as will be going offroad etc....

Why not see it as a golden opportunity to learn a new skill yourself? Thus also empathising with the little fella by falling off yourself occasionally?
