With aching muscles caused by doing different exercise to normal is it better to rest them or exercise them?

They are not really knackered but feel like they weren't properly stretched when cooling down.

If I start exercising them again will they loosen up or tear a muscle?

GENTLE exercise will aid a recovery.

Hows the shoulder(s)?

I found that commuting in by bike a couple of days after a run actually helped considerably, though there was a degree of sobbing on the first hill or two.

As Thomthumb said. The ache is due to lactic acid still in the muscle tissue. Gentle, i.e. aerobic exercise, helps remove it as does a good massage.

And as an ex always used to say to me, a massage doesn't have to end in s*x but it's always nice when it does.
