Hi All,
I have my 04 Attack Trail built up with a nice-ish kit (Magura Menja, XC/Mavic Wheels, mix of LX, XT & XTR goodness with Mono M4s) but decided it wasn't a nice bike to commute on. Along came the brainwave of some new wheels (Pro2 / ZTR Flow) which I've put slicks on with the plan being that these will replace the XC's when they eventually give in / i get bored....
Well, while that was the plan, I picked up a nice Spesh Hardrock frame, M575 brakes, carbon bar, nice fsa stem, slx shifter and have a nice but old XTR BB & Chainset somewhere and thought, well....I'll build it up as a 1x9 commuter.
All going well so far....but then I get made an offer I can't refuse for the Marin. So, if I sell it (still to be confirmed) I'll be back to one bike. The question then, is what fork do i go for. I'm not too sure on what would suit the bike and I am really out of touch with whats good and whats not. I want something with a lockout on it (ideally remote) but don't want to spend silly money...and ideally I'd want to get a new one.
I was originally thinking of a rigid if it was 'just' a commuter...but if I step down to one bike, I'll need something at the front end.
Also, I'll need something burly as I'm pretty far from a racing-snake-jey-boy ๐
Cheers all
2 bikes is the answer, 1 for business and the other for pleasure. It'll mean you can build up a beater and focus your efforts on a solid mtb for mtb usage.
Get some straight legged rigid forks (Kona P2, On-one something or others or them cheap ish carbon jobbies of ebay) for the beater. Then through a combination of travel and budget (I think you've got 100mm to work with) you'll get an answer.
The question is how much are you willing to spend and do you want to buy new or 2nd hand? When you say burly is it just due to your build or how you ride?
burly for my weight. any fork with my bulk on it will get a hammering ๐
Ah, but what terrain do you ride and what's your budget?
Off the top of my head some Rock Shox Rebas or Recons with Poploc would probably do ok, if you keep the Hope wheels then you've got some versatility with axle size too. Or there's always 9mm thru axle if you end up with QR forks.
I'd do a wanted post with budget, travel and axle size. You'll probably get quite a bit of feedback.
thanks...terrain (apart from the commute) is pretty much trail centre stuff. Nant-yr-Arian, Llandegla and Cannock will get the most of my off road time.
The travel question is probably the bit I need help with most!!!
I think your frame may only be happy with 100mm, maybe a cheeky 130 but if you are a substantial rider it may be better to stick with 100mm! Or get a 130mm U-turn adjustable and try it out? You can always run it at 100mm if it feels off.
i have a hack bike i send almost 5 pounds on it this year..
