[Closed] A Good Scottish Chain Lube Required

Hi all,

First time here, hope you can help.

I am looking for some chain lube that is good in all conditions. I have tried

Finish line dry - Not good enough for long rides if I get caught in rain.

Finish Line Wet - Good in wet but attracts too much filth if it gets dry.

Using Rock n Roll Gold at the moment, but I have to use quite a lot to get the chain soaked in it, then just to wipe it all off again almost before I ride. Bought the small bottle (4oz, 120ml) and I get maybe 6 uses from that just for almost £9

So what should I get for the unpredictable Scottish weather that is a good all rounder and won't get too gunky?

Thanks in advance

It's either:

stick to chain + have dirt stick to it.
OR
not have dirt stick to it + not stick to chain.

C'est simple! There's no "magic" lube that can somehow "select" what it sticks to/what sticks to it.

Just apply it properly (inside run, gap between sideplaces and rollers only, wipe entire chain clean once done), rather than drizzle a load over the chain and leaving it.

That Rock 'n' Roll stuff is wasteful. A straight oil (EP80/EP90, Finish Line stuff etc) applied as above is better.

Hi

I have started using Putoline chain wax

I am really impressed = it last ages, chains and sprokets remain clean, wear seems to be about the same and it soooooooooooo cheap - £18 a kilo not £50 a litre

Its a faff to apply and it stains clothes - but it lasts hundreds of miles in all conditions.

I will not be going back to liquid lubes

Jimbo - this stuff sticks to the chain but dirt does not stick to it - magic!

You could try a Scottoiler. It's a water based lubricant that is drip fed onto the chain from a reservoir strapped to the frame via a modified jockey wheel. They are very, very good. I used one on my hardtail for about three years before I needed to replace the drive chain, and that was a lot of mileage in nasty, Stirlingshire winters.

used to use finish line wet, but now using green oil on everything. not quite as tenacious as finish line, but doesn't appear to pick up quite so much crap.

Rock n roll extreme is working well in the wet peak district

Lifeline Syn lube is very good. In between the finish line lubes in terms of stickyness.

Chain wax seems good but it makes one hell of a mess! I dont really know how effective it is though as it is generally for larger faster moving motorcycle chains which through off lesser lubes. Interesting thread.

I may have found this magic panacia.

I've tried most of the smae stuff from the original post also in Scotland on road and off. Wet lube on road was dreadfull it was a grit magnet dry lube was useless, wet lube off road works OK but dry lube useless again. After each ride i have started spraying WD40 in a rag and runnig the chain through this to remove most of the solid gunk then just before the next ride apply a small amount of lube to top side of the whole chain. I also bought some wax and next time i de-grease a chain i'll give this a try.

The lube i'm using at the moment is a bit of a mystery it came from my grandfathers garage (he died in 1979) and was lying in my dads shed until a few years ago, its thick and green and was in a red thumb pump can with a spout. Its definatley oil and seems to work fine so far. Maybe i should get it analysed and put it on he market.

+1 for Green oil.

Sister bought me it as quirky gift - was out of my normal forklift truck chain lube so gave it a shot, now using it on every bike. Lasts ages, doesn't pick up much crap.

Finish line wet. Apply the night before and wipe off the excess before the ride. Works brilliantly in my part of Scotland.

I'm using some wax-based stuff - called Squirt or Spurt - can't remember but the name makes me think dirty thoughts hence why I can never remember it!

Seems to last very well indeed, takes a few rides for the chain to start getting a bit dirty (if the bike was washed every week or after every couple of rides then the chain would remain clean I think).

Cost-wise I think it is ok and the company is based down south - Bikemagic were doing a competition to win some lube from them but I still can't recall the name.

Goes on easy enough, you just have to make sure the chain is very clean and dry when applying the first coat.

I live and ride in Scotland. Was using a dry lube but just wasn't lasting long enough. Really liking Prolink chain lube on the recommendation of my LBS. Although its an oil it picks up amazingly little dirt and just wipes clean

Agree with Dick, I'm really impressed with Squirt wax stuff. I got mine from the BM competition too, but it's been excellent. Did the whole of Twentyfour 12 without a peep out of my drivetrain. It's not like any lube I've ever tried before.

Previously I like White Lightning Epic, but Squirt does seem better, as long as you keep your chain clean in the first place.

I use the Rock-N-Roll Extreme and am incredibly impressed with it. It sounds like your using too much if your only getting 6 lubes from a bottle? It doesn't say to drown the chain in it... A bottle lasts me a good while and with ride lengths of 3-4hours I have no problems, a wee bottle in the Camellback means even on longer rides I can top-up.

Scottoiler here too.
Have used them for four years now and wouldn't use anything else.

I live in Moray where it's a lot drier than the rest of Scotland. I'm using Finish line XC wet spray lube at the moment. I give the chain a good spray after every ride to disperse water and dirt, its working well.

No it isn't, it's wet and miserable and cold. The riding is pish and people should stay away. Nothing to see here folks, move on.

Green oil is OK in summer, but in the winter it solidifies into one big lump if I leave it in the garage or car, making getting the stuff onto the chain impossibe.

Green oil as in Finish Line Wet? Not my experience at all and mine lives outside my porch. Used in -14 to 30 deg C no probs. Mind you I do only use it when the weather is looking wet, otherwise I use the dry stuff.

After trying RnR extreme and green oil I've stated using squirt and find it loads better. Keeps the chain cleaner than when using green oil and lubricated longer than with RnR.

Works fine in the wet too.
