An old ultegra giant cfr around 1998 or older, carbon rear end and forks. Single rear stay at the top type one.
Or
2006 speclized elite, basic spec

Have frames improved enough to choose the speclized, both the same price,( very cheep )
Both 8 speed cassette, speclized has the thumb to shift down on the levers.
Just want a bit of road fitness over my off-roading

Whichever one is in the best condition. For what you want that's the most important thing.

Yup, a bike that old could need £200 of parts and labour to get going if its rough.

Frames probably not much in it, Giant spec sounds higher.

Even though Giant frames are usually very reliable, that's an old, bonded alu/carbon frame. I'd be a little wary of that.

Then again, I'd also be wary of an old alu frame that hadn't been looked after properly!

This is the giant on eBay. I paid £75, and I've purchased a cassette and chain. and some mavic wheels for £35.
So it stand me in at £130

The speclized I paid £80 on a impulse, it's silver by the way with carbon forks. It's not been abused, just in storage for a while.

Get the Giant. I bought a 1997 TCR with the same ultegra groupset (6600) and it was excellent. The SL alloy frame with carbon rear end will be just fine.

Provided it fits of course.

Both fit fine, I am impressed with the giant, I'm taking the speclized out for a blast today.
Keep you options coming I can't decide.

Am confused - why do we need to choose between them, have you run out of hooks in the garage roof?
I'd say the Giant i reckon.

So
The speclized was a big sluggish, shifting not as smooth, particularly the left lever shifting down from the top cog.

Looks like the giant stays

And yes there is a lack of hook space, mrs Stoddy just asked for something to ride.
