Would a 9spd front derailleur work with an 8spd setup?
Looking at buying a Shimano LX Front Mech E-Type 9sp M570, but in not sure if it would be too thin for my 8speed chain...
Can anyone spread some light?

Pretty sure you'll be OK width wise. Even with the correct front mech it's normal to get some rub on the mech in the upper/lower extremes on the middle ring and when you're crossed up on the other rings.

had 9sp mech and 8sp chain for years with no problems

Yup, it'll be fine. The same arrangement is working fine on one of my bikes, no issues
