Hi. I am due to overhaul my mid-90's hardtail and want to replace the chainset with a Hollowtech II unit.

Would this "9 speed" chainset work ok with a 7-speed Shimano rear setup?
Would I have to use a 9-speed chain to get proper front shifting, or would a 7-speed chain work ok?

Any advice appreciated.

It'll work fine.*

* Although:
- You'll be using a 7/8-speed chain which is a smidge wider than a 9-speed chain so at the high end of the cassette, the chain may rub on a larger chainring. Not a big deal.
- Are the chain and cassette worn out? If so, you are replacing them aren't you?

That's the news I wanted to hear, thanks!

Yes, will be replacing the cassette and chain, plus the freehub so I can fit an 11-tooth cassette. Will probably also replace the mechs whilst I'm at it.

Just trying to avoid replacing the relatively new shifters and having to re-dish the rear wheel for an 8/9 speed setup, as I only use this bike for commuting now.

Yep, as above. Worked fine on my old commuter til I single speeded it.
