Is it possible to bodge a 8 speed cassette to work with a 9 speed shifter? My XT rear hub seized last night (not annoying, at all) and the spare wheel I found has a 8spd cassette.

Any ideas, the LBS is a fair drive in the snow, so any help appreciated.

8sp and 9sp are different spacing. You might get a few gears OK but it'll never index properly

Don't have the cassette tool or chain whip. Was hoping there would be a cheats way to get round it.

Pick a gear you like and imagine you are on a super cool singlespeed bike

I set the limit screw such that 9 on the shifter was just past the bottom of cassette, but still on the highest gear, then with some delicate indexing 8 on the shifter becomes a ghost gear between 8 and 7 on the cassette, then 7 on the shifter was 7 on the cassette and so on. Seems fairly happy on a little test ride.
