I've a set of 8sp XT shifters.
Is there such a thing as a blanking plate for the gear indicator, and if so, where from?
If not, will fiery death ensue if I just leave it uncovered (on road hybrid of doom use)?

Nope. Blanking plugs weren't a thing until much later.

Worth a try.
Is it going to do any harm leaving the cam for the gear indicator uncovered?
