[#3223187]

Hi,

I have an '87 specialized stumpjumper frame that I love but it needs a new fork. Any recommendations? I don't want to spend a fortune on it but I want to keep it light. I'm looking at Rebas but don't have any experience. How hard is it to convert them from 100 to 80mm and will that adjust the geometry. Only reason for going for 80mm is to preserve the steering geometry.

What about some old marzocchi Z2's? Very cheap on ebay I'd imagine.

Rebas are dead easy to convert to 80mm if you are not totally mechanically inept.

That said, you can probably pick up some decent forks second hand for very little as most people don't want 80m forks these days.

I used to have some 85mm Marzocchi Marathon SLs that were great. Old school marz open bath action and bomproofness.

open bath marzzochis would be great but worried about the bad patch the went thu. It's 2002 bombers that are on it now but really need replaced as the seals are about gone and I can replace the forks for about the same price as seals.

sids look good, wasn't expecting to see them in my price range. Air I assume - Reliable?

Just mentioning the possibility that such an old frame might have a 1 inch head tube..?

Thanks for the thought Jack, it's 1"1/8 tho.

Is '87 a misprint? My 1993 S-Works Steel was still 1 inch!

Nope, pretty sure it's an 87. It's the M2 Comp edition and back in the day it would have been top of the line and that might explain the headset size. I picked up the frame second hand some time ago for next to nothing. Couldn't resist it because I'd lusted after them when they were new, cutting edge and way out of my price range.

I remember the same feeling. But I felt that way in the early '90s, at the very earliest. 😉

I can confirm that I'm one of the old buggers that singletrack forums are renowned for 🙂

If you own a Specialised M2 (Metal Matrix) frame dating from '87, the only rational explanation is that you are Ned Overend - and you had access to a time machine. 😀

I am in fact Ned Overend, well deduced. Wish I had a time machine tho. If I had I'd set it for 5 hours ago and go to bed. I'm in Western Australia and it's 4.30am. What the hell am I doing up.

Think I'll head that way now and leave singletrack to find me a fork.

Heh-heh. WA, eh? Sleep well!

Reduced travel SIDS, I reckon. It's a classic bike - no need to mess the handling up with longer travel.

I'm still running ancient RS Judys... 😳

are looking new or second hand?
If second hand I have a set of Manitou SX carbon (vee brake only) and also a set of Manitou SX Ti (v brake or disc)on a shelf in the garage.
Both 80mm and from the era, and in superb condition.
let me know if either of these would help you.

Not a cat in hell's chance that's 1987!

Got a picture?

Even a modern 80mm fork will trash the geometry. I'd get some old 28mm SIDs, shorter crown-axle.

you might be right, it may be newer - my mind isn't what it used to be. Haven't got a picture atm. I do remember it was supposed to be from the last year the frames were made in the US and I got it in the US. It's a green M2 Stumpjumper Comp.

I'll need to do some more research on axle to crown dimensions of original and modern forks then. The fork that's on it is a 2002 Marzzochi Bomber with 100mm of travel. I don't know what the ride was like when the bike was new with the original fork but it's fine with this set up and I really love riding it.

I also have a set of 28mm SIDs sitting on the same shelf as the Manitous!
Again, let me know if they are useful to you.

Can you ping me some details please, looking to update my old dekerf and these could fit the bill 🙂

Hi Phil, sorry I didn't reply. You have quite a museum and now I'm spoilt for choice. I'll see what Wwaswas says and let you know. Many thanks.

I got some 05/6 U-turn Rev's and even reduced to 85MM there were still tall (axle to crown measurement) as 105mm Marz's. Though you can apparently add in more "all travel" spacers and reduce RS forks past the lower 85mm travel setting... this might be an option to consider (try the 85mm setting and lower it if its too 'long')

Dekerf - they are the carbon crown/steerer blackbox technology ones. V brake and disc compatible, 190mm steerer, in used but good condition.
They have a remote poplock fitted - I probably have a remote lever somewhere on another shelf! I'll take a photo later and post it.

Like Mostlyharmless says, I do have a museum of bike bits, never seem to get around to selling anything! I put a complete bike together out of the spares box the other week (seriously!) and it didn't really dent it!

It's a green M2 Stumpjumper Comp.

A 1998 one?

Came with 63mm Judy T2s IIRC, stand by my suggestion of SIDs.

Should move this thread to the classifieds.

Zippy - how much for the Rev u turns?

HTTP404 - I'll take the White Bros forks if they are in good nick. Got a photo? I assume your figure is for UK post tho, how much to WA? I'm also looking for a fork for my wife's bike and this might be perfect.

Sorry, I actually meant Reba's above (though I have both), and am not selling them, just suggesting an avenue that might be well worth investigating

mostlyharmless - I've sold the fork now - I think the postage vs price ratio was just too high.

Thanks anyway. I was going to go for it but no problem.
