Someone I know reckons they hit over 60mph the other day. Any one else reached this mesmerizing speed? Or is he talking Kak.

A mate of mine hit 54mph coming down Ventoux the other day in insane cross winds. 60mph is doable, with some talent and balls.

Very steep hill and a road bike? If so, it's doable if you've got the balls.

Yes very easy... well relatively.

If the wind is in the right direction ie not face on then its quite easy here:

I've done it on faired recumbents. In mud on a MTB? No chance 🙂

Is he getting MPH and KPH muddled up? My brother in law used to race DH and talked of going 60-70MPH, I just rolled my eyes. 🙄

I've done 60 twice. Both road, both with a tailwind. MTB would be tough.

60 on a mtb? BS.

Been just under 50, but that was on a miles long dry stony fire road in the alps on a DH bike, and that was sketchy sketchy business.

Fast world cup sections, like windham at the weekend they edge over 60km/h.... tell him as he's half again as fast as Gwin to get doing some WCs 😉

My Garmin said I hit 56mph down here on Sunday
It was certainly too fast to look down for a realtime confirmation

Had just over 60mph in the Alps - what was scary was that there were French roadies coming past me. All the speedos were in the same ballpark figure; highest I saw reckoned 65mph, mine said 61mph.

On a mountain bike - talking utter rubbish unless you're this bloke

Maxed out at 48 once, that was plenty fast enough on skinny tyres dressed on a tee shirt & shorts ( thin gloves and a lid) down a damp road with overhanging trees and a bend but 60 would defo be doable, just that I wouldn't be doing it.

Never beaten 43 on an MTB with knobblies and that was on the road.

60 does sound a bit optimistic.

I'm sure the speed trap at the last WC DH was clocking the top boys at about 64... Kph on a nice dry day on a steep hill in sunny Yankland.

You're mate is either the Lord of BS or has his Miles and Kilometers mixed up...

Out of interest how did he measure his stunning ground speed?
bike computer? GPS logger? wind through his hair?

Correction: 63.035 Kph actually

54.8mph on the road bike down School Lane into Hathersage

46mph on my Heckler donkeys year back (y2k-ish), down Eyam Quarry,- hard pack.

I cleared the steep glacier section of the Mega 2 years back, feet up, off the brakes. No idea how fast it was, but even through the fullface and goggles it felt ridhiculoooooosley fast. That's the only situation I could imagine breaking 60mph off road in.

If my computer was to be trusted, I got 70mph on a mountain bike with Specialized Turbo S's. Down here:
http://goo.gl/maps/2q4i

I see it's a Strava segment, but unfortunately it only shows average speed including a small rise and a long flat section:
http://app.strava.com/segments/1088457

You get to see the profile though.

Unbelievably, just checked it as a Strava climb and people are managing a VAM of 1600 up it!!!

Edit: You can see what people's max was down it. 80kmph it seems, so maybe my computer wasn't set correctly (it was the 90s!).

I've recorded* 63mph off Holme Moss and 61mph on the descent off Mont Ventoux to Malaucene.

Am a parent now, so have slowed down loads.

*No idea how accurate my Polar speed sensor is.

He may have recorded it, he may even believe it, but if he's that good he should be leading the WC series.

As he isn't, I suspect he's just plain wrong or telling porkies. Either way, hitting even 60kph in mud would take an exceptional rider; most mere mortals in proper mud on a slope steep enough to even approach that sort of speed would be crashing out well before that.

50 mph is easy down this, 60 mph with a tailwind and some slipstreaming should be doable. The KOM has average over the section of 52 so I reckon must have peaked at 60+

I hit 35-40mph fairly regularly on my commute home (road bike, downhill) and shit my pants every time. Dread to think what would happen if I ever got anywhere close to 60!

50ish mph is easy enough on the road given a decent hill, 60+ is a lot more of a struggle though as you either need a very big gear and a lot of power or you need a hill that's at least 10% gradient but has long straights (or at least gentle enough bends you don't need to brake) - they're pretty rare in the UK.

hit 55mph in the Black Forest. that was on an mtb with slick, a BOB trailer and my lucky red hat (no helmet). i knew it was fast because i over took two cars. got to the bottom, just slowing down enough in time before the old town and the cobbles.

i hit 50mph last year going to Jaufenpass in South Tyrol. again mtb.

i know one guy whose idea of fun is riding up the valleys in austria and then careering down them. he has some vids on youtube where he is overtaking cars at 105kph.

i'm sure it is doable off road, but you need to know where. but then going fast in a straight line isn't all that difficult.

On the road on the other side of Ditchling Beacon going towards Brighton my bike computer was showing 52mph a few years ago - hardtail with spesh armadillo tyres on. It was quite terrifying actually if I'm honest as I was only in shorts and t shirt with no helmet.

With the hill, wind, and road in our favour, we hit 54mph on our tandem.....
Scary, and the rim brakes smoked on the slowing down!!

I usually top out just over 40mph on my road bike. I MIGHT have the balls to go faster if the roads were straight but frankly that's just about my comfort level right now and I've no need to test the limits of adhesion of my tyres.

My old computer claimed I did 85mph uphill on my mtb. but that was in County Durham and I'm sure the iron ore screws the magnet up.

I did hit 47.5mph on saturday on the road bike (had to slow down for traffic), and I've done it before on a panniered up mtb going down the Lindis Pass in NZ.

Well, back in the day, the pros would hit 60mph+ down the Kamikaze.
So unless your mate is called "Son of Tomac" I'm dubious of his claim.

My bike computer once recorded a top speed of 98mph, but I never really believed it you know.

when it appeared on facebook some time back, i got some flak for suggesting it wasnt as rad as they thought and a road bike would have gently freewheeled past them somewhere near the start...

Sixty? On an MTB?

Chinny-reckon.

The fastest I've ever been on an mtb was 42mph - registered on my two riding mates' speedos coming down the hill back into Betws Y Coed. I was on a Rockhopper at the time and I recall it being 'kin scary. You're ten miles per hour beyond the upper reaches of gearing on a triple MTB chainset and every single twitch through the bars is brown shorts time.

I've no desire to repeat this feat.

I've seen just shy of 50mph on the mountain bike in the brecons, but that was on road and a bit stupid too, if there had been a tractor or car round some of those bends I would have been turned into a stain.

Had the road bike 3 weeks and top I've recorded so far is 47mph around Farley Mount. I imagine with bigger hills it would be easy to get 60mph

48. 2 mph according to the GPS [ lowey has pics and he overtook me - its all down to mass 😉 on a standard MTB downhill of Drum [ Conwy] mountain. Dry and grassy but as smooth as a bowling green so assume 50 ish
60 in mud absolutely no chance

62 mph on a rigid mtb on road (A689 alston to bishop auckland, near nenthead)
cateye computer set by tyre rollout, 14% gradient.
when i got to the bottom, i slowed quite noticably, glanced down at the computer and i was still doing 50.
if i had realised how fast i was going i would have got a bit lower on the bike, i was sitting upright.
if your mate has done 60mph off road id say hes got BIG balls, although i wouldnt say its impossible.
i remember some road pro back in the late 80s strapping a camera to his bike, he claimed they would hit 70 down some hills.

Only touching that speed for a second or so before trying to carefully scrub speed.

Just cannot imagine a mtb off road in mud getting anywhere near 60mph.

Better give BMC a call then, you've a ride waiting. Thor Hushovd, regarded by his world-class peers as the best descender in the peleton, only just beat that speed down a long alpine descent (Col D'Aubisque, Stage 13 last year IIRC) on a top of the range road bike in full racing tuck.

45.5 mph down the old horseshoe pass road near llangollen a few years ago (MTB). It was a pretty stupid thing to do as there's a small junction at the bottom - luckily the car saw me as I doubt I could have stopped in time.

Max off road recently is 35.7 (down basically a flat grass bank), but I need gravity as I run out of gears around 20mph. No way would I jump on a road bike and do anyhere near 60 TBFH.

In Africa I hit 90kph about 5 or 6 times during the tour. Never got faster then that, but I was on a 29er mountain bike with 1.6inch slick tread.

60mph down a muddy hill is a load of crap. 60kph doable though....

Followed a man on a slick tyred 26" tourer with panniers doing 55 MPH (according to my car's speedo) down into Redhill from the M25 a couple of months ago.

A mate recorded 51 MPH going down test hill in Cudham recently.

Some guys I know reckoned they did 55 MPH going down Kirkstone Pass into Ulswater on the Fred Whitton.

Not for me, thank you.

At 42mph? It's possible to pedal faster than 90rpm, you know 😉

(115rpm on a 44/11 gives you 42mph)

"@ crashtestmonkey, col D'aubisque isnt as steep though . . . "

yeah but drag goes up linearly with cross sectional area, and as the square of speed. If you consider the relative cross sectional areas and drag coefficients of upright and prone riders and baggy clothing vs lycra, the effect of the increase in drag with the increase in speed and the trigonometric effects of the change in gradient on the effect of gravity you end up with

62mph upright on an MTB = utter B*ll*x.

But hey, a £10 bike computer set with a tape measure must be right, eh.

I had a recorded 62mph coming down Caerphilly mtn ... road bike again.

Which side? I struggle to get much above 45mph on the Cardiff side, but then I am older than I was, I've got kids, and there's that T junction just as it flattens out...

There's a reservoir access road (tarmac) in Cwm Ogwen in North Wales - me and a mate went up and opened all the gates, and bombed down in an effort to hit 50mph. I was covering the brakes and chickened out once I hit the target but I was still accelerating plenty and had loads of road.

60 yes - if the hill is big enough. One of my local road hills is a consistent 50mph plus descent. Get aero and pedal up to about 40mph - then tuck in and watch the speed climb.

@crash test monkey:
obviously, any bike computer that relies on measuring the wheel circumference is subject to a degree of inaccuracy due to tyre compression etc, but im only telling you what was recorded, gps hadnt gone live in those days, this was all we had unless your dad was a copper and could 'borrow' the handheld laser gun.
btw, i wasnt in baggy clothes, full lycra, with an awesome tailwind.
rac route planner gives the distance as 41.72 miles, my computer recorded 41.75 miles
motorbike recorded 41.9 miles for same journey.
and, just so we're clear, in no way am i claiming to be any kind of awesome rider or anything like that, i reckon anyone following me that day would have done at least the same.

I touched 54 mph on the hill that goes down to Cullingworth from the main Keighly Road Denholme side on a Cannondale Prophet a few years ago. I got the wobbles half way down and crossed the road and luckily as it was an early Sunday morning, there wasn't any cars coming up the hill at that time and since then, I have become a little more mature and sensible. 😯

63mph on a MTB with slicks more than once speed checked with GPS and bike computer.

Good brakes are needed at the bottom as the road narrows and ends in a "T" junction, so I've never had the confidence to go fast on my road bike.

Regularly do over 45 mph on't road bike in Sussex.

(latest here - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/195571854)

Have seen 40 - 45 off road, but only on the big grassy Butser Hill when doing the SDW.

This trace has recorded 40mph but not on Butser ❓

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/102796507

However the 35 shown on the Player going down to Cocking is a bit brown trousers as that's loose flints and chalky. Road Rash wouldn't begin to describe the mess if you came off on that stuff.
