I've just picked up a second hand Kinesis Pro 6 and have enjoyed a few forays outs on it but last night I split the current Maxxis Mud Wrester rear tyre in 2 places on a square edged drain cover surround (luckily only 4 miles from home). So I need a new tyre but being new to this type of biking I'm not sure what's best, I think I can fit 40mm at the front and 38mm rear.

Rims are Stans Alpha 400s and want to go tubeless - Google tells me that WTB and some other brands don't play well with this rim?

Mix of bridleway, gravel, road and singletrack. Not too much mud, singletrack is loose and sandy.

Schwalbe G-One Allround tubeless (38mm) are good. They're at the road end of the spectrum though. If you want something knobbier then look elsewhere.

Maybe on the back, not sure on the front for singletrack. A few of the WTB look perfect but I've read a few people saying their impossible to mount on Stans Alpha's.

I've got the 35c Gravel King SK on a Pro 6, it measures up to about 37 and I probably wouldn't go much bigger on the back as the chainstay clearance isn't generous on those frames - more room in the fork. Has a micro-knobbly tread that works pretty well on the surfaces you describe.

2nd the G-one allround. The best off road capable tyre on the road I have ridden. Not great in muddy stuff but if it's dry they are hard to beat off road too. No tried them in sand.

Vee Tire have a pretty good range in that size.

I have a 40c Rail on the rear of mine and a 47c (actually a 29x1.75) of the same pattern on the front. Seem to be out of stock mind 🙂 Work well and happy with them. Not sure whether some of the other patterns might work for you?

Second the gravel kings

I've got the 43mm version and they are great, and set up tubeless super easy

This is worth a look:

More at the CX end of the scale but I am really happy with my Ritchey Megabite 38mm for proper off road forays. Under £30 from Bike24 in Germany.

If you're mixing road with trail, 40mm G Ones are awesome. I'm waiting for some 45mm Riddlers at the moment too, I'm definitely of the bigger is better camp as far as offroad tyres is concerned.

I’ve read a few people saying their impossible to mount on Stans Alpha’s.

Don't feel restricted by other folks incompetence.

Are those G ones with bigger knobs out yet?

I'm quite impressed with the WTB riddlers on my Arkose. They'd be no good in proper mud but grip ok on damp surfaces and rocky trails. Roll reasonably well on the road and not too noisy.

Massive G-One fan here so that's a +1 from me, ridden them in mud, snow and all sorts 😀

Happy with the WTB Riddler 37C that came with my Sonder. Lasted pretty well, roll quite nicely on road, enough grip off-road. Easy to set up tubeless with the help of an Airshot.

Tread is pretty thin now on the back and both front and back have a few big cuts in the tread so I'm replacing them now - done at least 1500 km (maybe closer to 1800km?) on them so that seems pretty reasonable.

I've gone for the Resolute as a replacement - simply because I'll end up doing more off road in the summer.

Does anyone use Smart Sams? They're cheap and look to have tread that would work on and off road. Good price too

yeah - I like smart sams, they get quite exciting on wet grass, but a really good compromise for road/off road.

I would suggest the nano is a better all rounder as I find it a bit tougher, slightly more hard wearing, although that maybe because I have used the nano in 40mm and the smart sam in 32mm.

That's good to hear, what version of the Smart Sams do you use? I'm hoping the wire ones will go tubeless.

I don't think any wire bead tyres are officially designated as tubeless? You could try it anyway but I'd be extremely wary of using higher pressures. I plan to get some wear out of my Riddlers then buy the tubeless version.

The newer 2017 Smart Sam is much better than the older tread pattern. Been on them all winter and no probs so far. Pretty much the same pattern as a nobby nic

Won't be using more than 40psi

I've run the old version of the wired Smart Sams tubeless, but I've also seen one fail catastrophically

I order a new style Smart Sam for a bargain £12, only to find it's they used the wrong photo so it's the old style. Is a new style that much better that it's worth sending this one back?

Gravel King slicks are very smooth on road and I like them better then the Maxxis Refuse on gravel, also super light..

So what pressures are people running on the G-Ones?

I fitted a pair of the 40mm (well, 40-622 or 700 x 38c and I haven't actually measured them..) G-one allround tyres a couple of days ago. Went up amazingly easily tubeless.

Only had one ride so far, with 4 bar (in the middle of the 3-5 range printed on them). Felt good on tarmac, but very rattly on fireroad. Will be trying closer to the supposed minimum next time.

Specialised 'Trigger pro' is pretty good option. Went up toobliss on my Stans Crests really easily.

Not gone tubeless yet and about the same pressure, think they were a lot lower to start but until I get that sorted don't want to be fixing flats on the commute

You've a Grail haven't you? If the wheelset is tubeless ready and the G-ones are TLE then it'll probably be the work of a couple of minutes to go tubeless - mine went up first go without sealant!

I've been to Decathlon for the correct size tubes today, which will give me a bit more confidence to experiment with pressures. I'm also still getting used to the new bike (SuperX), so will take my time adapting position and pressures, not all at the same time.

I've 37mm G-Ones and run them at around 50psi tubeless for mixed surface (google tells me this is 3.5bar).

On wet clay they are a bit slidey (in a fun way) but on anything else vaguely gravelly or dryish they're excellent.  Amazingly smooth and fast on the road too, in fact I'm thinking about ditching the road bike.

Same here. Picked up a pair of 38c G-One Allround Evos from Rose Bikes for a bit less than £60 delivered and they are fab. In fact, astonishingly so on the road. Mine were a pig to get tubless (they just wouldn't lock into the rims, but once done they've stayed inflated without a problem.

Yep though gave away my last bottle of sealant when I left Oz and have no tape so just need to get round to picking all that up first
