There are a ton of these avail for 1 x 10 at the moment, but what if you were a real wimp and wanted to build a 2 x 10 36/26 or even a 34/24? Where are the rings with shifting ramps? I did have a 38/26 last year and it was okay, but I did feel I was spending too much time on the inner cos the 38 was a little high.
The rings for 3x will give you more options i.e, 22, 24, 32 & 34 rings and are the same pcd.
Recently built a Yeti SB66 1 x 10,
decided to go 32 tooth, as previously on my 2 x 10 setup on my 456 I was always using the inner.
Gets a 14 stone bloke up most things if you put in the effort...
FSA do their Afterburner range in 36/22 and 36/24
Raceface Turbine rings also in those ratios.
I'm sure I've had an Afterburner triple with 24/34 but I cant see any reference to it.
I run 2x10 with an slx chainset fitted with a blackspire super pro 34t ring, available from crc. The shifting is not as good as the shimano ring but is perfectly adequate.
Been running 34/36t rings for years on 9sp with no issues (22/3_) I've had FSA and middle burn in that time. All shifted properly.
Running a middleburn 34 tooth 4 bolt on my five at the moment.
Got it from RJC Extreme.
Thanks everyone. I'll try it out with FSA or Middleburns next chainring swap. They'll have to fit my XT M780 though.
but I did feel I was spending too much time on the inner cos the 38 was a little high.
there's an obvious answer to that... ๐
OP I currently run XT 2x10 38/26. I spend the majority of my time in the big ring dropping down to the wee ring if I get to the biggest rear sprocket in the cassette. BUT like you I think it's crazy to be in a 38 all the time when I never get to use the full top range of the cassette with it. I'm looking to drop it to a 36t. From my own research into it, I've two options (as shimano don't offer a 36 in xt rings). Blackspire as mentioned above or raceface. LBS recommending raceface so gonna give that a go and see how I get on. I can always swap back if I don't like it.
OH has a bike build ready on Monday with XX1 so looking forward to trying that and seeing if it really is all it's cracked up to be........
I've been running 36/26 for a while now and I've found this combination ideal for me. I do spend almost all my time in the 36t ring. The 26t is only used in serious deep mud situations where putting the power down doesn't get you out of trouble.
Shimano do a Deore 36t ring that's steel. It's only a bit heavier than the equivalent xt and lasts a lot longer.
Got my Middleburn on a four bolt from Activesport, 34 or 36 or 38 with pins and ramps
