26 inch rims - what are my options?

Building up a new dirt jump/pump track bike, and there's a real lack of any decent rims around.

So far my options appear to be:

  • DT FR 560 - expensive, not super light, probably OTT.
  • DT E593 - Cheap but pinned and heavy
  • Halo SAS - rubbish
  • Halo Skelter - Single wall
  • Halo Chaos - light, but single wall and quite narrow
  • Hope Fortus - Single cavity, likely bendy if they're like the single wall Fortus I've used before.

Am I missing anything? Do I just need to go 32 for the best selection due to the ancient wheel size?!

Chaos or 560s see like the only real options at the mo, but neither are the perfect balance. Can't find stock of 26" EX471s at sane prices/in the UK anywhere.

How are you defining Halo SAS as rubbish?

I had some many moons ago on a freeride bike and they were bomb proof. Wouldn't be surprised if they were still in use today.

Nearly 800g, single cavity and nominally not tubeless!

I'm sure they're strong, but there must be better more modern options.

That's fair... it was long before tubeless was a mainstream thing when I had them, and weight wasn't an issue on FR bikes.

Are any of these ossues on a jump bike?

One of the reasons I'm building a new one is the weight of the old one, in both wheels and frame. I'd like to try some lighter and more modern bits to help hide my shortcomings. And I find single wall rims harder to build with and keep straight. So to hide my wheelbuilding shortcomings.  Either way, I'm not building a wheelset with ~1550g in the rims alone.

Halo T2 looks to be better at 600g per rim

Slam69 do a lot of DJ specific stuff. DT D1900 look pretty well balanced in terms of price/weight/performance. Or there's the Reverse Components rims that look decent.

Although I would say you probably don't want tubeless for a DJ bike and associated higher tyre pressures, and are there even any tubeless DJ tyres about?

Cheers. Yeah the tubeless isn't really a deal breaker, however some of the pump tracks one been riding are ****ing grotty:D so it's just at the back of my mind. More weight and strength, especially as I'm learning 360s at the mo!

I've got some nice hubs so really just looking at the n runs at the mo, been browsing Slam69 quite a bit, just trying to stop the budget going totally through the roof 😀

ive got a Hope Trials SS hub (10mm bolts, 135mm wide) on a Sun Rhyno Lite (with rim braking surface too), that im about to put up on ebay.

Built 10 yrs ago, used maybe twice.

ive also got a 40 hole Disk rim Off our cargo bike on a hub that crapped itself. I was going to take the hub out and try and give the rim a new life, if you want a high spoke count.
