just priced up a groupset via Rose & Bike Discount which works out at £255 plus postage (not including brakes).

i'm a little confused about which rear mech to go for.

i'm going for a 38-24 on the front and a 11-36 on the back. the bike is for my wife, hence the low gearing (although, for £7 more, i could have a 11-34 xt rear cassette?!?).

(36-11)+(38-24) = 39

the gs rear mech states capacity as 35 teeth (although states that it works with a 11t - 36t rear sprocket and a 22t chainring difference), so i'm guessing i need the sgs rear mech?

does anyone have a definitive answer to this?

cheers

p.s. I presume there is little merit in spending more on a XT groupset?

I run the long cage SLX mech on my soul with the same ring/cassette combination and its fine, not sure if its right or wrong, but it works. Mine isn't the + version (well not yet anyway)but I presume the cage lengths are the same.

cheers for the reply.

i have ordered the sgs rear mech (longer cage) as it will allow use of all gear combinations (regardless of whether they are sensible or not). if i went for the medium cage, certain combinations would be outside of scope (such as little/little which would leave too much slack).
