MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
My BB seems to be dying and it's an Octalink one (with Deore cranks, all originally from the £400 Inbred I bought quite a few years ago) that from a quick scour of the usual shops will be £35 or so to replace in the size I need. Chainrings are starting to go a bit too.
Merlin have the Deore 590 chainset for £50 inc BB - is it the no-brainer decision that it appears to be?
Just fitted one On a GT and it looks good. Was a bit gutted that ribble started doing slx for £51 plus bb for £19. Seems like a better bargain to me. Obviously I can't comment on longevity but the bb is different to slx and xt. Overall I'd say if it meets your budget then it's a BUY 🙂
£56 on ribble after all discounts
It's old style XT, therefore excellent stuff

Unfortunately it's not. Deore isn't hollowtech.
Not hollowtech? That seems a bit gash - my relatively ancient M510s are hollowtech, and from what I can find, not a great deal heavier than XTs.

..says it's hollowtech.
My 2010 Deore chainset is definitely HollowTech 11.
and it's the one in the link.
So....is it worth getting a Deore one for £50 or
Truvativ Firex Team with bb for £53
or
Race Face Ride XC Chainset with X-Type bb for £65
or
Truvativ Stylo Chainset inc bb for £80
Any help?
I bought one of those from Merlin in Feb when they had a £5 ****ter discount
Its fine!
From the 2010 Shimano Trade Sales And Support Manual -
Deore FC-M590 Crank construction - 2 piece solid
So yes it has external BB but it is not Hollowtech II as the arm is not hollow.
Having said that my GF has one on her Genesis Core and it works great.
Yeah mine works great too, no complaints for the cash.
unless im missing something here its the same as mine and mine is hollow

It's nought to do with the big hollow axle if that's what you mean, it's whether or not the crank arms themselves are hollow. Deore are scooped out at the back, eg not hollow.
EDIT: someone already explained, never mind...
ah, fair do's
