[Closed] 2 cross wheelbuild, any reason not to?

I'm building up a new front disc wheel, and i thought i had the right spokes for 3 cross, which is what I've always done in the past.

Turns out i only have spokes long enough for a 2 cross build. Any reason not to? I can't imagine it making any difference, and it'll actually make a slightly lighter wheel.

What says the STW mind?

lower torsional stiffness for 2x 32H builds. This means tension changes when braking will be higher which means spoke life will be reduced a bit. How much no one can say.

More importantly a bigger radial component of spoke load will be worse for the flanges.

If you want to get fancy and save a wee bit of cash then just get longer spokes for the disc side of the wheel and do 3x disc side and 2x non disc side.
I've built loads of wheels up that way and never had a problem, saves a teeny bit of weight, gives you an almost imperceptible increase in lateral stiffness (assuming you build it right of course) and if anyone ever notices you get to be the smartalec who "actually didn't build the wheel wrong, it's supposed to be like that.!"

Will be less strong than 3 cross but will proabably be fine, road bike often use radial spokes on the front which is even less strong but a little lighter.

Yes but radial spokes should only be put on a hub made for radial lacing, even if it's a front non disc brake wheel.

2 cross you will probably be fine, but you will be losing some strength from the flanges. You could do 3 cross disc side and then you're only weaker on the side with lower tension on it.

I didn't know they did special hubs for radial lacing, you learn a new thing everyday.

Well i got it built up, and also set up tubeless. The rim is a DT Swiss 533 & the tyre went on almost too easily (Nobby Nic Evo), but has stayed up fine.
I must admit from past experience i haven't been impressed with DT rims. But this one built and trued up extremely easily.
Took it out for a 30 mile XC jaunt today, including a couple of DHish trails, and not a ping or wobble in sight.

I have 2 cross on my AM build Sultan. I did a fair amount of reading, and the conclusion was such a tiny difference in stiffness as to not be appreciable between 2 and 3 cross, especially as I was building with wide carbon rims.

Possibly a bit more stress exerted on the hub flanges too.
