Hi,
As above, will I need a chain guide and if so can you point me in the direction of one?
Thanks!

Some people get away without one.

I'm using a Blackspire Stinger on mine. A proper SS chainring helps too, apparently.

Thanks - and chainring/crankset suggestions?

Worth making the move? I'm on a triple at the moment, never shift to the granny or big ring...

I've an On-One SS chainring on mine, on Deore cranks.

32:32 is a plenty small enough gear, after all we had 28:28 as a granny gear a few years ago.

Superstar do a chain guide or tensioner for £17 or a guide and tensioner for £35. I've been using the basic guide for a few weeks now with a standard ramped chain ring and am yet to loose the chain, even on two laps of Cwmcarn yesterday.

as Dr bakes said, i bought the SS £17 one last week (no tensioner)and tested it with a ramped oldish middle chainring.
The lower side of the chain has popped off a few times (on very rocky stuff) but this doesn't affect performance because as soon as you pedal the top part just puts the chain back on again. and I haven't shortened the chain yet from my triple set up so this could be cause of that.

all in all im pretty pleased with 1x9 and certainly pleased with the device.

fatmutha, I did the same using the middle from my triple but I took two links out of the chain. It will probably make quite a difference to the tension and help keep that chain on,

I've ordered a singlespeed chain ring with deeper teeth now I know that 1x9 is good for me, so that should help even more.

yes you need one and yes it's worthwhile doing for many people.

The MRP 1x and E13 XCX are intended for the job and are a lot lighter and give better mud clearance than the top and bottom dh style devices although they do allow the chain to drop occasionally on back pedaling.

DB, purposefully left chain that length as i was unsure which chainring size to use, 32:32 seems to fit me fine around here so now will take a few links out and when my middle wears a bit more get one of those on one steely rings like i have on my SS or the £15 goldtech ones from BETD.
