Inspired from a previous thread, I made my own chain device for under £15! It works well (no chain rub at all) and actually looks ok too 🙂
Weighs in at 73.5g. Not the lightest but could be made lighter with alu washers / barrel nut.
Just thought I'd share my info to make it easier for other people that might want to make their own!!!

I have just paid about £35 for a Pauls Comp one. Mine is clearly better, as it has vastly more price than yours. 🙂
Seriously, lovely job.
Thanks!
I had just ordered a Paul comp chain keeper. Unfortunately, I received an email to say they had just ran out of stock. Rather than wait (or use a cheaper DMR chaincage) I thought I'd have a go at making one...
Currently making another for the gf's bike 🙂
where were you ordering your Paul keeper from?
Fresh Tripe. I see that they have 2 in stock now but I'm happy with mine 🙂
Yours looks great. Was wondering as I ordered from Freshtripe on saturday & was showing in stock.
Nice work!
Nylon washers would be lighter and would make less noise if the chain did rub on them.
I had a search for some large nylon m6 washers but couldn't find anything big enough 😥
thats very smart - i love homemade stuff like this. i might have to have a pop at one of these for my winter bike....
Since you're publishing weights...
Why not cut down the washer so you only leave the bottom half (well and the hole obviously) that you actually need?
Or better still, get some nylon sheet and make a proper 'cage'.
Nice work though.
TBH, by chopping the top off the washers I'd probably only save a gram or two. My main gripe before was the weight of the heavy steel washers, but now it weighs a lot less... job done!
Well, for neatness then 😉
I made one of these a few years ago for an on one & did cut the top off the washers , the problem was that sometimes the outer washer got knocked & turned , making it less effective , & looked silly which was more important.
Superb!
Excellent MacGyvering, well done.
Any chance of an in-situ pic?
Sweet (-: That's awesome.
Nice work Augustus!
that looks better than some of the "proper" ones
Good job!
Another alternative would be to use an actual roller like the ones on MRP and Blackspire chain devices. They are available seperately as spares from CRC...
I just sold a DMR Chain reactor/chain cage combo (and my spare pulleys) that I was using before this! They are good but I prefer this device because it's silent and the bike feels smoother to ride now.
where did you buy the nylon washers from in the end please?
and do you take orders?...no really 😀
Wow, nice work. Where did you source all the bolts and bits - could I just turn up to my local b&q?
DT78, I got the bolts from Tastynuts. You might find them in B&Q, but probably only steel versions.
walla24, I can make you one if you like?
