Does anyone use bash rings with 1x? Not sure I've seen anyone doing it. Wonder why it's no longer a thing.

Nope, but I did run an ISCG mounted bash guard. Rings are heavier, and there aren't many that fit direct mount.

Because the chain is always on the "big" ring it protects the teeth.

In the olden days used to always switch to the big ring before hitting a descent with significant chances of rock strikes.

Also as the "Big" ring is now smaller than the 2x and 3x rings there's much more rock clearance even though modern geometry BBs are lower.

It'd work in lieu of chainring spacers...

ISCG mounted bash guards work regardless of crankset. Especially as most are modular, using DM chainrings

It helps to keep your trousers away from the chain.

🤔

Never had a "big" ring on a DH build. And it's not so much landing on rocks as rocks getting flung up that's the issue ime.

I think the main reason is that they're an integral part of a lot of chain devices and since narrow wide and clutch mechs evolved people have less need of them.

Also, running 1x is about simplifying drive chain. Less mud crevices etc: a bash just adds more elements back in there.

Having said that, i run one on my big bike, where it's more likely to hit rocks and have stuff fly up. My trail bike is 'naked' however.

I think there's a couple of reasons... Partly, with multi rings it was useful extra chain retention, which is pretty much a problem that's solved now. And partly it's because if you weren't in the biggest ring, you'd be way more likely to damage the teeth, whereas if you were in the big ring you'd be bumping steel instead. And now you're always in the big ring.

I always liked how they look tbh 🙂 I think for me in particular, I always kind of liked bashing the bash ring, it felt pretty awesome. But LONG LOW AND SLACK means if you do that too often you pretty much catapult yourself into space, so I've more or less stopped doing it
