Hi, I got myself some fleabay Cannondale bits - there's no original paint or frame number. Even the cable stops have mostly been removed. A bit of forensics suggests it's a 1990 SM400 - SM1000 series frame and a Pepperoni threaded fork. I don't think the F&F left the same bike shop on the same bike. But they're roughly similar ages.
However, I can't get the headset to fit. The fork has a very short thread, 1cm exactly. That's not deep enough to get the top race screwed down to the bearings. I'm pretty sure that a longer thread cut would sort it - but this obviously worked once upon a time.
The headset I'm using is scavenged from a child's thrown-away bike and is a totally standard 1" POS.
Any advice?
Cheers, al.
The original headset probably just had a higher stack height.
Thanks clubber, so I tried that. I put spacers between the cups and the frame so the bearings would tighten. But then there's not enough thread left to get the top washer and lock nut on.
Ah, I think I'm off to the local metal shop next week to get it threaded another 20mm.
Cheers, al.
