You have £1600 to spend on a trail/Am bike - what would you do?

Buy new? Buy and build from a frame? second hand?

I sick of looking and going round in circles, so without asking a specific question I thought I'd just ask and see what you'd do?

What did I do? I bought a Radon Slide 8.0 from Bike Discount. Think they're out of stock though 😐

Great bike. Really pleased with it, although I'm going to switch to a 200mm front rotor as I could've done with a bit more stopping power on my recent Alps trip.

OP where are you based?
i've got a friend selling a 2013 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Evo (medium). he's ridden it a few times but has decided to get rid of it due to not having the time to ride it

I sick of looking and going round in circles

what have you been looking at? just to narrow it down a bit as you'll either end up with the stock answer of Trance/Anthem or Capra...both differing ends of the scale though

I'd probably go something fun for what you ride, Custom steel HT?

Would have to second / third / etc the Bird Aeris

Modern geometry, UK based, good spec for the money, appears to be decent warranty & customer service

Alternatively go second hand and get an 18mth old bargain off Pinkbike if you know what you're looking for

In the time honored STW tradition of recommending your own bike…

There are a few Cannondale Trigger 4 29ers left at Pauls Cycles for £1200. I’ve got one and it is the cat’s ass.

With the money you have left over get a dropper post, a new suit and a kilo of monkey nuts.

2015 Commencal V3 from them direct - £1415 plus carriage. My brother has one, 650b wheels with decent tyres, Pike and Monarch rear shock, 1x10 with a range expander - properly mint bike for not much cash. I'd have one in a shot

Grab and end of season Trance 27.5 bargain - or look on eBay/Pinkbike for a pre-owned version (but beware of the 2014 model OD2 steerer...)

I've just bought a Trance 27.5 3 (LBS did me a great bargain!) to compliment my Reign 27.5 2. The Trance is very, very fast through singletrack, climbs great, and the descending isn't too shabby either! Very happy with it.

Overall more 'playful' than the Reign, which is a bit of a beast.

I'd be tempted by a Commencal too. V3, or the base-model V4 is just within budget, give or take shipping and exchange-rate.

(for the sake of openness, I own a Meta SL V3 and love it so I'd certainly be interested in its bigger brother if the need arose)

I had the Norco Range Killer-B (27.5, 160mm) a couple of years ago - stolen last year 🙁 (Reign replaced it).

IMHO - the Giant Maestro suspension is far superior to the Norco's licensed Specialized setup. It just seems to work better, everywhere. Far more compliant, and takes the big hits. Pedal efficiency is also much improved.

Reckon you could build a better Codeine for the money they're asking for that one.

How abot a Rose Uncle Jimbo with a few upgrades? Spank finishing kit/wheels, stealth reverb etc.

v666ern -

Which LBS/Any other sources - my mates after one?

I googled, found a great price from a retailer in Manchester, then I asked my LBS (The Bike Yard, Leamington Spa - speak to Billy) what they could do (we'd been discussing different models, and Billy did offer a fantastic deal on a 29er previously, but I wanted another 27.5). They then bettered the deal!

Very, Very happy with the deal, and the bike.

Look forward to seeing what you get next ton, any ideas on what you'll be looking at?

As for the original post I have nothing to offer as I'm more a steel based xc rider. Good luck though looking a for a new bike though 😀

I'd be looking at deals on 2015 bikes, like the Norco shown earlier.

Otherwise, I'd track down a Bird Aeris.

Then I'd spend an afternoon in the pub with the change.

I'd probably try to build up a Bird Aeris using Superstar wheels, 11speed XT, a Reverb and a Pike - and I'd end up going way over budget.

Are you open to the possibility of 29in wheels BTW?

I'd not get a 160mm bike if you want to do distance and a mix of road in with the riding. 130mm Mega or similar would be better with some nice climb switch control.

I was in the same place a few months back and was looking at building up a OO Codiene or a Unviel/Hammerhead. Last minute I bought an Orange Five 29'er from eBay and it's been great so far. I've used it around local rides on South Downs, Surrey Hills, Afan & BPW.

ST stereotype shot, Audi and an Orange Five;

being a long-term tyre kicker in this market I would have previously said Radon Slide from Bike Discount, but I am really liking the look of the Commy V3 in neon yellow linked on page 1. Only needs a dropper post.

5' 7" here and ride a medium Norco Sight. Some frames are bigger than others, shorter/longer top tubes etc. Unless you can get a test ride to try the larger frame size it'd be a bit of gamble though.

I'm 5'7 and a medium spitfire fits me a treat., modern geo is a wonderful thing. Bought one this year and took it recently to the Alps. Put it into slack mode and it handled everything that was thrown at it. It kept up with Capra's, bronsons and strives no problem. When I got home changed the geo back and Iv got a 140mm bike that can rip around the local woods. Best bike Iv had.

There is one on here. Top of this page.

I have short legs and a medium frame means it's impossible for me to run a dropper post.

Mosey, where are you based? My medium spitfire is for sale I am 5'8/5'9 with a 29" inside leg. Which is very very short (some say pathetic). I am selling my bike and you are more than willing to cock a leg
Over it. Even if you are not interested in buying mine! I do run a longer stem (60mm) as I have a longer body to make up for my leg length

That looks ace! The raw and green is a great combo.

Ended up buying a codeine in the end,, but the way things are going I'll probably chop that in by the time the 2016 models are out.

The customisation is great and some proper bargains unlike other manufacturers who seem to want to charge for the inconvenience.

Thanks guys, I've settled on a Trandition Scout/Patrol. Either from frame or full build second hand.

Thanks Russy, might take you up on that.

2014 Orange 5 29 Pro, 2014 Stumpy Enduro Comp 29 and 2015 Trance 2 27.5 all "cheap" @Cyclesurgery due to BIKEEXTRA10 code that's running 'til Monday.

If I didn't have an immaculate, under-used Alpine 160, and I hadn't just spent £1500 on a Cannondale SuperX, I'd buy one of the previously mentioned Commy V3's tomorrow...

I had a v3 and didn't get on with it. I'd happily give the v4 a go but they don't have the VIP frame in small.

I'd really like to try a Trek Remedy too but nobody seems to have small in stock.
