Has anyone fitted a set of new Pikes on a 2010 Zesty?

Think the Floats that come with it are straight steerer? If so, what headset bearings were needed for the lower race?

Looking at the 150mm RCT3's solo Airs, any issues with these?

If the frame is a straight steerer and the pikes are tapered they won't fit.

Think the headtube is tapered but the floats fitted are straight, was some form of Lapierre special headtube.

...... I think......

Hence the question.

I see, I thought they were straight until 2011 then went tapered.

Edit: This might help

I have 27.5 160 (at 130) duals on my 2011 zesty.I thought it was non tapered in 2010 too.

Looking at the specs on the 2010 / 2011 seems that the tapered head tube came in 2011 and 2010 looks to be straight. Certainly no mention of tapered.

Might need to have a rethink as to how to make the front stiffer / safer for an alps trip.

Maybe just try and pick up some bolt through lowers.......

You can do it. I have Pikes on my 2009 Zesty. It's a 44mm non-tapered head tube so you can fit tapered forks using an external bottom cup (ie. Hope Pick n' Mix Top: 2, bottom: H).

I have dual position 160/130 Pikes and intended to use them at 130 most of the time, but in fact only drop them on long climbs (if I remember). I actually use a Works Components angled headset to slacken it off further and reduce the rise in bottom bracket height caused by the longer forks. I also swapped to lower rise bars to counter act the raised front end. I find it rides very nicely.

Sort of bumpage so the dude sees it, but I also remembered that I made a nerdcore spreadsheet at the time calculating the sagged axle to crown lengths for various Pike travel lengths compared to the original Fox 32's (the +EC is to allow for the extra 10 mm in stack height due to the external bottom cup you need).

Will this work with any tapered steerer forks on a Lapierre Zesty of similar vintage? If so, good bodging!

Yes just remember you are gaining about 10mm A-C just going from Zero Stack to External Cup. Maybe you want to use a fork which has shorter AC for its travel like Fox.

Thanks but I wouldn't really call it bodging! There does seem to be a bit of a misconception that a tapered fork requires a tapered steerer, when there are plenty of older frames out there with 44 mm (and 1.5") headtubes that will take a tapered fork fine.

No offence intended Timmys, perhaps I should have typed "good technical knowledge", but that sounded a bit geeky.

Out of interest, which Works Components headset did you use? I'm also looking to upgrade the Float rear shock to better match a longer fork and am considering a CCDBair but there's not a lot of info online to give any feedback.

Interesting. I've got a 2010 Spicy that could do with being a bit slacker and a fork upgrade from the original Domains.

So looks like I could look at all sorts of tapered forks then, presuming the headtube is similarly sized as yours.

Looking at the WC angled headsets but not sure which one would be suitable..?

It would be this one as far as I can see; http://www.workscomponents.co.uk/10-degree-ec44--ec44---tapered-steerer-tube-headset-740-p.asp

When I got mine he'd been promising a suitable headset for a while but it hadn't materialised. Eventually he got tired of my "is it available yet" requests and sent me his prototype ๐Ÿ™‚

The longer fork + external bottom and top cups does add a fair bit of front height so I'd really recommend looking at reducing your bar height as well (flat bar, less spacers etc.)

I'm not sure how much higher the BB ends up after all this (probably not much), but there's always the option of offset shock mounts to address that (I didn't bother).

I've got a 2010 314 with 150mm straight steerer Revs and it's fine.

Tapered forks are fine, it's a 44mm ht so fit external cup like hope H and good to go. External cup rill slacken things further by adding apx 10mm to stack. You may want to shorten the fork, though my mate Chris used to run a 314 with 150's and a slackset.

150 in a 2010 314 with 50mm stem and 760 bar is not compromised for climbing with standard unlock able float r.
