riding budy wants a steel Hardtail for Peaks riding, he has £1500 to spend.
I have suggested the xt spec 456, Rock lobster 853, and a cotic soul

Any other steel HTs between 120 and 140mm travel that are worth looking at?

456 without a doubt, if he wants the larger forks go for the summer season with the slacker head angle. Also why blow £1500, buy a frame and kit for the classifieds.

Given he's got the budget for it then I'd have thought the Soul the obvious choice. Fair enough go for the 456 if he can't afford a Soul. Might also be worth considering the BFe.

The P7 seems really heavy and very expensive considering the cheaper tubing it uses so unless it's for the type of riding that justifies something that burly I can't see the point (and even if you were doing stuff than warrants the P7 then surely the lighter and cheaper BFe would be a better option).

I was in J E James Chesterfield branch and they had a Kona Duffer on offer for £870, RRP is £1200. May do the trick. Had a look and couldn't find any reviews, so a bit of a punt.

Oh yeah their on-line price is still listed at £1200, odd!?

I would want a lighter frame like 853 as the heart of a 1500 quid build

Sharki here.

I rekindled my love of 853 today, the bike was a soul and confirmed it as the best HT bike frame i've had the pleasure of riding hard.

since when was a ss designed for 100mm forks? it'll be like a regular 456 on 150mm forks when run on 100mm - but it'll take all of them surely?

NS Bikes Surge frame + whatever

Another vote for the Genesis, I've had an 853 tubed and a 520 tubed one - excellent geometry, do everything hardtail. Just dump the Conti tyres.

I think you get more bike for the money with the Rock Lobster 853. I have had mine since 06 and although I have replaced everything through wear and tear (except brakes and shifters) I think the xt spec is spot on.

Genesis Altitude, Dialled Bikes Alpine.

For that money he should consider the Genesis Core 50, Its not steel but I just got one and think its an absolutely ace as an all rounder, and I have a Prince Albert 853.

Not steel, but I'd have an Orange Crush and pocket the change for that money.
