Seems like the 990 is a few grammes lighter for quite a lot more beer tokens. Is that the only real difference? Been running a 980 for yonks and new wheels on the way so seems a good time to replace it and the chain. Am I missing some glaring omission? (To use with KMC 9 speed chain)

Nope, don't think you're missing anything - except the option for coloured anodising on the spider of the 990 🙂
I currently run a 990, as and when it needs changing, i'll be going for a 980 and a couple of beers 🙂

£40 for a 990 on Planet X http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CASRPG990/sram_pg_990_cassette

Hmm that's not at all bad. Even posted to Aus it works out at $66. I suppose I could put up with a pointless anodised spider for that price! Sold! Thanks 🙂

Slippery slope.... Ordered a new KMC chain and for good measure, can anyone recommend a new middle ring for my XT chainset? I think the one that's on is 32t but wouldn't mind upping it to a nice 34t. Middleburn still good to go for or have the latest Shimano ones been made from a tougher kind of cheese?
