I've just ordered a medium cage m985 xtr rear mech as I'm looking to go 2x10. What size cassette is reccommended for such a set up? I'm thinking 11-34, but I'm not 100%

Thanks in advance for you help. Woody

Can run anything up to 11-36 happily with a medium cage still.

I thought the maximum for a medium cage was a 34?

nope

you can use any size you want on a new medium cage 10spd mech. The limiting factor is the number of overall teeth difference, including the front ratios. So you are fine running a medium cage on a double with an 11-36, or even better a single ring, but you can't run a medium cage on a triple unless you run a mega close ratio cassette like an 11-23 roadie one or something...

Well i've gone and ordered a 11-34, is it worth sending it back and swapping it for a 11-36?

No point going for anything but 11-36 IMO. If you went for 11-34 you may as well stick with 9 speed.

Out of curiosity, what tooth chainring is recommended for a 1x10? I'm not going to be racing, more long day rides and evening spin type riding. 90% of the time i'm in the middle ring so have been wondering why I bother carting the other two around.

34T front 11-36 rear for me. Seems to work fine.

34 front 11-36 for me, can get myself up most things, and don't spin out too often. Bit more fitness in me and I'll probably move up to a 36.
