Can someone on here explain to me correctly and accurately why a 9 speed shimano rear mech won't work with a 10 speed shimano shifter, when coupled with a 10 speed cassette.
Is it something to do with the pivot points in the mech? As far as I can see a mech is just an adjustable chain guide whose parameters of movement is controlled by the ratcheting of the shifter.
So in my mind it's the shifter that controls the mech movement and the indexing of it in relation to the cassette and not vice-a-versa, feel free to correct me with accurate evidence / engineering reasons.
ratio of mech movement to lever cable pull is different to 9sp, so needs a new mech (I believe)
Not sure whether this differs at both ends - ie you MIGHT be able to run a 10sp mech with a 9sp shifter & only use 9 cogs*
*(This may be ill-advised bullshit)
Right, so it's how far the mech moves for each click of the shifter then?
yeh, but it may also be how much the cable moves for each click of the shifter - I dunno
