Has anybody had any success running a 10 speed Shimano rear mech with a 9 speed Shimano shifter on a 9 speed cassette? Basically can I run 10 speed rear mech on a 9 speed set up?

I thought they were different pull ratios...

They are different ratios. There are a couple of bodges that almost make it work, but it would never be perfect.

^^This basically.

I've seen a guy drill out a new guide-hole for the cable to achieve a different pull ratio. There were pics somewhere of someone who'd done something similar but I can't find them. It still doesn't feel right; getting progressively worse towards the extremes of the cassette. It's just not worth it imo.

There was one mentioned here the other day too. Using a 10spd Shimano mech with a 9spd SRAM shifter by adding a spacer to the cable clamp.

plenty of folk would probably be interested in swapping mechs with you, if you wanted to try that

There is another bodge involving a little pulley system to compensate for the pull but given it involves buying stuff ...

Any Shimano rear shifter before 10 speed and any other mech is fine.

It's the the Shimano 10s that are different. It would sort of work on a get you home basis but it certainly wouldn't index properly.

If you're going to try be very careful with your low limit screw...

You can use a road 10 speed rear mech.
