Hi

OK, so I currently have an XT M770 chainset with the big ring replaced with a bash guard (so a 22 and 32 ring).

This is a temporary measure as I spin out with the 32 ring and an 11-32 PG980 cassette.

As I've tried and failed to correctly fit a chain guide to my Tracer I quite fancy one of those new XTR clutch rear mechs. So my er few questions are:

1.Does the XTR clutch mech have to use a 10 speed chain?

2.Do non-shimano 10 speed chains work OK on shimano 10 speed rings?

3.Can I put 10 speed rings on my 9 speed cranks (M770's) ?

4. If I go for 10 speed, what would be a good a good 2*10 trail riding setup in terms of rings and cassette ratios?

and...

5. If I bought a new XT or XTR 10 speed crankset with rings, is there any way of fitting a bash guard (presumably not?)

thanks! 😀

1. Yes, in so far as it's a 10 speed mech, and will only work with 10 speed

2. Yes

3. You don't need to change, although you obviously want different sizes, 9 speed rings are fine

4. Personal. If you use your very bottom gears then I'd say 22/36, if not then possibly 24/38 or something

5. If you buy the race doubles no, the XTR trail double (22/36) yes, you could buy a triple and change the rings if you're that fussed.

Hi, thanks for the response! There does seem to be a bit of confusion on the web with regards XTR cranks and bashguards though.

The thing is , I really do need one as most of my riding is ploughing through rock gardens in the Dark Peak(s) ..

There are 2 XTR double chainsets - the 88mm BCD 'race' one, which has bigger rings (28/40, 30/42, 30/44 IIRC), That won't work easily with a bash guard, although a bodge is always possible!

There's also a trail chainset with a normal 64/104mm BCD and smaller rings (22/36 etc) which you could do more easily.
