Knackered my Kona King Kikapu Frame so as a quick replacement I sourced a nice Merida HT frame.
Went to fit the forks - the new frame is 1 1/4" and the forks are 1 1/8".
Can I reduce the headset or fit a new steerer to the forks or what?
Somewhat hacked off coz my spare bike is also knackered and the Puffer is coming up. Training on the road doesn't quite simulate the misery of offroading in muddy darkness.
you may be able to find a 1 1/4 to 1 1/8 reducer headset, but I think 1 1/4 is a fairly obscure size now. Only heard of it being used on older Cannondales / Gary Fishers etc.
Do a search on the online bike shops for reducer headsets and you may be in luck. It should just press into the frame and a normal 1 1/8 headset will press into the reducer cups. You may need a little bit more length on the steerer to allow for the reducer cups unless they are flush in the headtube.
something like these http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/result.asp?CategoryID=170&Name=HEADSET+REDUCERS
The new frame will be 44mm Internal Headset I'd think. Not 1 1/4in.
Plenty of options out there.
Thanks for the info everyone. Wonderfully helpful as ever on here ๐
The "new" frame is actually an '05 or '06 Merida and as it was a fraction bigger than 1 1/8th I just assumed it was 1 1/4".
Will check with my local Merida guy (who gave me the frame) tomorrow as to spec.
Last time I messed about with headsets they were still threaded (!)
