McLaren launches 161Nm torque eMTB range

by 42

Yes, that McLaren. Of Formula 1 fame, purchased by footballers. The makers of supercars have turned their attention to ebikes. There is a long history of car manufacturers doing bikes badly, but you might hope that someone as high end as McLaren could get it right. In all honesty, it’s hard to tell at this point – the PR doesn’t include any geometry, or information on which motor and battery system McLaren is using. We have asked. We have also asked the obvious ‘How Much?’ question. In the meantime, you can explore the PR for yourselves.

And yes. That’s a lot of torque. And yes, that is a cockpit. And we like the counting of ‘off’ as a 5th power mode.

Now you can say ‘there’s a McLaren in my garage’.

From hypercars to hyperbikes: McLaren launches debut electric mountain bike range

  • Debut McLaren e-bike range embodies the defining qualities of McLaren’s iconic supercars to deliver McLaren design DNA and performance
  • McLaren’s first hyperbikes, the “Extreme 600 and Sport 600”, vie for title of the world’s most potent e-bikes with up to 600W and 161Nm of torque*
  • Designed by McLaren supercar designers with hand-laid carbon-fibre frames and 5 power settings: Off, Eco, Trail, Sport, and Race
  • 600W and 250W versions of both Extreme and Sport versions will be available in limited numbers*

*600W versions will only be available to purchase in the United States

Renowned for game-changing supercars and hypercars such as the McLaren P1TM, luxury supercar maker McLaren Automotive is ushering in the era of the electric hyperbikes with its debut range of electric bikes unveiled today.

Taking inspiration from the company’s award-winning supercars, the new limited-edition four-bike range extends McLaren’s extreme performance-focused design and technology into the electric two-wheeled world for the first time.

Designed by the same teams responsible for supercars like the electrified lightweight McLaren Artura hybrid supercar, the first-ever McLaren e-bikes embrace signature McLaren attributes such as carbon-fibre construction and next-generation electrification to deliver an authentically McLaren high-performance experience.

Integrated front light is very moto.

The e-bikes’ powerful motor enhances their high power-to-weight ratio, a pivotal attribute mirrored in the development of every McLaren supercar. Designed with torque figures that surpass the standard of other premium e-bikes, the McLaren e-bikes have been engineered for class-leading performance.

Further reinforcing the link to supercars, the McLaren design team devised an innovative digital display whose graphics mimic those of the cars’ driver displays. Ensuring maximum rider engagement and user-friendliness, telemetry information including speed, battery life and range is shown on a full colour integrated LCD panel on the handlebars.

You are a pilot and this is your cockpit.

Four distinct models – Extreme 600, Extreme 250, Sport 600, and Sport 250 – each offer the ultimate two-wheel ride, whether on city streets, off-road tracks, or mountain trails.

Not weather for F1 supercars, is weather for super ebikes.

The flagship McLaren 600 versions vie for the title of the world’s most powerful street-legal electric mountain bike with its Race mode delivering up to 852W of peak power and a top speed of 20mph/32kph.

Two electric mountain bike models are available in limited numbers: a 29” hardtail version, and a full-suspension version with 29” front wheel, 27.5” rear wheel, 145mm of rear travel, and 160mm of fork travel.

Good tyres.

In total, four models complete the range, each with seamless power transmitted to the rear wheel via a 12-speed drivetrain, SRAM electronic XX Eagle AXS on Extreme models, and SRAM mechanical GX Eagle on Sport models.

McLaren Sport

The ideal, all-purpose mountain bike that is just as at home off the beaten track as on aggressive single track, with integrated componentry and minimalist frame design for pure McLaren style.

As with McLaren cars, there is a choice of power modes, selectable via the digital display on the integrated cockpit:

  • Off – No motor assist
  • Eco – Energy conservation for long rider
  • Trail – A set-it-and-forget-it balance of power and efficiency
  • Sport – Extra power output for when the trail demands more
  • Race – Max power and max torque

McLaren Extreme

The Extreme is a full-suspension electric mountain bike designed for maximum off-road performance, control, and comfort. All five power modes are as per the McLaren Sport. The Sport and Extreme models are both shod with Pirelli tyres.

Availability of McLaren e-bikes is limited. Customers can secure one by visiting www.mclarenbikes.com

Coming to a football ground near you.

Now that the website is live, we can bring you a bit more information…

There’s still no mention of precisely what the motor system is, so we don’t know if it’s a McLaren’s own or a rebadged existing motor. You do get a two year guarantee though, so there’s that as reassurance. The full suspension Extreme 250 costs just £9,600 – not super ebike prices by any stretch. The hardtail Sport 250 is £7,200.

There’s still no word on geometry, but the aesthetic is very Tron – 1000 hours worth of effort has gone into it. And that’s a lot of torque – although not as much as the 161Nm cited in the press release. EMTB hill climb drag racing, anyone?

Who wants one then? The cheapest McLaren you’ll buy?

Is there some sort of tax break to be had for car brands when they make these bikes? Generally they’re pretty shit and your left wondering why did they bother

Because there is a lot of money to be made in bikes I would imagine

Is there? Really? Now? When any number of manufacturers are probably skipping unsold stock rather than depress the market [even further] I doubt there’s more than a couple of cars worth of profit in it.

    Marketing apparently.

If it has the build quality and reliability of their cars then I’d give it a hard pass

Just because avg salary people think e-bikes are overpriced and can’t afford them , doesn’t mean that people who can afford a McLaren are in the same situation.

Random fact – McLaren are by far the fastest depreciating super car brand

Let’s face it, there are hundreds of people turn up at trail centres in their 80-90k vans or suv’s that would love to have an ebike brand like this.
    Money doesn’t matter to them

Nice way to add an extra £10k onto a sale when someone buys one of their cars or a freebie to throw in to close a deal. Any mention of who makes the motor?

There’s a comment on Pinkbike that it’s actually a 3yr old Chinese catalogue frame. I sincerely hope so otherwise I suspect Gordon Murray will be equally horrified…

Vying with all the other e-bikes legally limited to the same power?

Comeooooonnnnnnn Singletrack this isn’t a bike and any goon who buys one will likely never pedal it.

My friend works at McLaren. I have told him to hunt down the person who gave this the green light and kick them right in the goolies!!

The only person I know with a McLaren is far too tight/not into bikes to buy an E-bike.

IIRC he said The car is largely paid for by renting it out to experience day companies. No idea if that’s true.

It is but a 600W e-bike does sound quite fun, assuming the geo is not utter arse.

Oh my. That really hasn’t gone well in the styling dept has it.

A 600W motor – assuming that means a continual power output of 600w rather  than a short peak of 600W is going to munch a battery.

IME, manufacturers end up giving these away to the purchasers of the cars.

So Chinese catalogue bike, a press release and a photographer who has a brief to not show ‘whole bike shots’ too much?

    Is that the US limit?

1000 hours! that’s 25 man (person) weeks.  And, according to the way it’s written, that was just to do the styling. FFS

I get the desire to bring some McLaren design and innovation to the eBike world and there’s definitely something to be said for a fresh pair of eyes on the subject but this is ****ing hideous!  Did no-one think to open the door to the bike world and see what the state of the art is? How bikes are used? How we users customise things to fit us? I don’t know what’s worse, the gopping frame design or the proprietary handlebar/stem/light/display combo.

I get that this is going to be a rich person’s add on to a much bigger purchase – “can i also interest sir/madam in this, our latest eBike? It’s the perfect compliment to your supercar of choice and would look great in your garage (might be collectable one day)” but to punt it out to MTB magazines as if it’s a proper bike is ridiculous.

Hope it rides better than it looks.

Most full fat ebike motors from Bosch Shimano etc are around 600w with no time limit on that figure.

us limits vary I think but that will fit most of them IIRC

Bit cheaper at around £2k though.

Porsche also do a line of ebikes for those which have more money than sense.

Not a patch on the ones they made in the 90s though https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/porsche-bike-fs-evolution

90s Porsche bikes were from Votec which were quite mad but apparently quite good for full suspension bikes back then. The Votec brand is now reborn after bankruptcy and much duller.

Almost same story with Mercedes bikes which were rebranded AMP bikes with that cool parallelogram fork.

Reminds me of the Bianchi emtbs I saw in a shop near Perugia a few weeks back.

Really disappointing given Bianchi’s usual output.
