New Cairn E-Adventure Limited Rambler Edition

by 3

Pedants ahoy… Cairn has launched what it’s calling the ‘Cairn E-Adventure Limited Rambler Edition‘… surely this should be the Cairn E-Adventure Rambler Limited Edition? ‘Come and get it now, there’s not too many of these Ramblers’, rather than ‘only for limited rambling, now, don’t go overboard’? Certainly, our previous experience aboard the Adventure 1.0 and BRAVe models would have us think this new Rambler Edition won’t be limiting your adventures. Let’s see what Cairn has to say about this new edition:

We built upon the success of previous E-Adventure iterations and BRAVe models to create a lighter, faster and even more versatile gravel e-bike, born to explore and designed to open the door to adventures anywhere.

Cairn

Cairn E-Adventure Rambler Edition key updates:

  • All-new geometry: suspension-ready and more capable
  • Lighter weight: 14.3kg total (size medium)
  • Premium build spec: Campagnolo Ekar 13-speed groupset paired with updated Fazua Ride 50 drive system and HUNT x Cairn E-Gravel Disc Wheels
  • Refined frame details: reduced weight and improved ride characteristics
  • Size Extra Small now available

All-New Geometry

With a pinch of inspiration from its big brother, the Cairn BRAVe, and a splash of the ‘Lower, Longer, Slacker’ geometry learnings that have made modern mountain bikes infinitely more capable, we created at bike that captures the adventurous spirit of gravel riding. The Limited Rambler Edition aims to bring the rider more control without losing the lively and responsive feel riders loved from the original E-Adventure bike.

The steeper 74-degree seat tube angle allows for better climbing on rough terrain, giving you a more aggressive attacking position whilst maintaining the all-important rear wheel traction. Combined with the slacker 70-degree head angle and increased 75mm trail, descending characteristics are more predictable, stable and comfortable, empowering the rider to let off the brakes and push the bike further. The net result of the geometry changes is a riding position that puts the rider more in the bike than perched on top, achieved by increasing the bottom bracket drop to 80mm whilst maintaining a stack height with manageable saddle-to-bar drop. For those looking to max out the benefits of these geometry updates, we’ve made the Rambler Edition compatible with suspension gravel forks. Tech speak aside, we think we have made the Limited Rambler Edition more fun to ride.

Finally, we’ve responded to requests from many riders and introduced an extra small size to the E-Adventure range.

Suspension Compatibility

The Limited Rambler Edition is the first Cairn E-Adventure to offer suspension fork compatibility, made possible by the geometry updates and changes to frame design.  If you decide to add a suspension fork to your E-Adventure, we recommend the following fork parameters, based on our own testing:

  • 30-40mm travel
  • 40-45mm offset
  • 700 x 45c+ tyre clearance
  • 180mm rotor
  • 12 x 100mm spacing (to maintain compatibility with stock wheelset)

Single Wheel Size Focus

The Rambler Edition is available with 700c wheels only. For this Cairn model, we believe that 700c wheels make the most of the bike’s updated geometry, and offer the best balance between speed, grip, and tyre choice.

Frame Update Details

Committed to constantly improving bikes for riders at every opportunity, we’ve built on the improvements made to the V2 E-Adventure frame and introduced even more frame refinements in the Limited Rambler Edition. To allow more flex in the seat post and create a more comfortable ride, we have further shortened the seat tubes, which has the additional benefit of decreasing stand over height in all sizes. We have designed a slimmer forged chain stay yoke profile with smaller tube diameters, which increases vertical compliance whilst maintaining lateral stiffness for pedalling. For riders, these improvements reduce leg and knee fatigue.

Finally, we have decreased the down tube profile by roughly 25%, which reduces frame weight while also offering a more compliant front triangle, resulting in a softer ride and less hand fatigue for the riders.

Fazua Ride 50 Street Drivepack Info

The Cairn Rambler Edition comes equipped with the all-new Ride 50 Street Drivepack and BB from Fazua, featuring refinements that take the base set by the Evation system to the next level.  The new Drivepack features increased torque output (58nm) to help tackle those technical or steep climbs. New cooling fins help manage system temperature. Fazua has eliminated the bolted drive pack USB cover.

Most notably for riders, new torque and cadence sensors within the Ride 50 Street BB unit increase the sensitivity of the unit by 70%. This will allow the system to further smooth out motor input and provide the natural ride feel that the Fazua System has become known for, while improving system efficiency by nearly 10%. The Energy 250x battery brings the final flourish of details to the build. The 250x offers the capability to turn your bike on and off from the Remote FX, eliminating the need to drop the Drivepack out to turn the system on and off. A new cap on the charging port adds a nice touch and reduces maintenance in the future.

Premium Build

For the Limited Rambler Edition, we continue our partnership with Fazua, offering excellent range that is further bolstered by our Range Extension pack, giving riders the ability to carry multiple batteries for truly off-grid adventures. We have also teamed up with Campagnolo, utilising the brand-new Ekar 13-speed drivetrain. Combining the widest range of any mechanical gravel-specific groupset on the market with the assistance of the Fazua system, the Cairn E-Adventure Limited Rambler Edition lets you hang up those walking boots because the bike is going to take you all the way to the top, climb after climb.

In partnership with Campagnolo, we’ve managed build our Lightest E-Adventure yet. At a Little over 14kg (14.3kg in medium, to be exact), the Rambler Edition is the lightest bike Cairn has ever made, and one of the lightest alloy e-gravel bikes on the market.

We continue our work with sister brand HUNT Wheels to offer a specific wheel fit for the rigours for which this bike was designed. The HUNT X Cairn E-Gravel Disc wheels have been developed specifically for the Cairn E-Adventure Rambler Edition and feature a steel axle and increased pawl contact area for a long-lasting hub. The Gravel X Wide rims feature a 25mm-wide internal rim dimension, offering better tyre profiles and allowing for the use of lower pressures to increase traction and comfort. Like all HUNT wheels, the set is 100% tubeless compatible.

Im a big fan of gravel / cross / adventure style bikes but the constant marketing of these as “rad”, with pics / videos of skids and jumps etc. is just utter nonsense.
