Fresh Goods Friday is here again, and my willpower has already left the chat. Letโ€™s do this: dinky cranks first, then the rest of the shiny trouble.

RIP Sly Dunbar

5DEV R-Spec eBIKE Levo SL Cranks

Short cranks. They’re very much in vogue at the moment. And I’m here for it. Pedal strikes are not nice. Having said that, I can’t seem to get used to cranks shorter than 160mm. Which is fine, because these very distinctive cranks from 5DEV are 160mm long (short?). Pedal strike is actually the instigating reason for getting these in for review; we’ve bent pedals and knackered pedal threads on the (170mm) cranks that came on this Spesh Levo SL2. And there’s only really 5DEV who do aftermarket 160mm cranks for this bike/motor.

ODI Universal Number Plate

We’ll hand this over to our Aran to use in the imminent race season. ODI: “offset mounting system allows the number plate to sit at difference distances from your handlebars allowing cables to be routed in front or behind it. The Universal Number Plate will fit almost any handlebar. Durable but flexible reinforced construction and multiple attachment points around the edge make it extremely versatile.” Also available in black or grey.

Galibier Fire Feet Knee Highs

Long socks FTW. 40% Merino wool, 40% Acrylic, 18% Poliamide, 2% Lycra. Antibacterial fibres. Flat-seam toe. Abrasion-resistant sole. Sizes: small: 38-42, medium: 42-45, large to XL: 44-48.According to Galibier: “Itโ€™s essential to save these socks for cycling; avoid activities like running or gardening to ensure their longevity.” I think we can manage that.

  1. This arrived too late to get built up and photographed for this weekโ€™s FGF. So youโ€™ll just have to wait and see what it is.

20p says itโ€™s a Megamo Reason, the bike on which Seb Stott said heโ€™d never used the brakes so much on climbs

  2. I bought a Race Face Deus crankset for ยฃ215 back in 2006, which according to the Bank of England’s inflation calculator is ยฃ376.29 today, so closer to that ยฃ450 crank’s price than I expected. On the other hand that crank came with an axle, a bottom bracket (granted and awful one) and three chainrings, plus it was 15mm longer! 😆ย

  3. I had the same problem with pedal strikes on my Levo SL Gen 2 and ended up fitting a pair of the 155mm Specialized cranks that were fitted as standard on the Kids Turbo Levo SL. I was assured that these cranks were the same spec and strength as those fitted to the adult SLs. They were only ยฃ80 and have been fine so far.

  4. So is that an radial then? He says it is, but the schwalbe ones aren’t, they’re just a more obtuse bias ply.

Random thing I learned recently is that specialized have been varying the angles of their bias plies for years, they just didn’t really think it was worth mentioning. Makes me wonder if anyone else does. I’ve never ridden a specialized tyre that really like the schwalbe radials though.

  5. Those socks look decent enough. I’m struggling to find a thick pair of winter socks. Latest attempt was some Howies boot socks. Merino, and good quality but disappointingly thin for boot socks. Still got cold toes.
That Park Tools mug caught my eye, too.
Is that a raz mag blurred out?ย
