Únic is a clothing manufacturer based out of Andorra with a factory in Poland. The company only produces clothing to order, and they’ll happily customise their kit to what the customer wants. These customisations can be simple colour, logo, or graphic choices, all be handled online through their custom clothing editor, but more extravagant changes can be made if you contact them.

Únic has been a key sponsor of some of the biggest names in mountain biking, including the former World Champion Camille Balanche, French National Champ Benoit Coulanges and Hardline newcomer Matteo Iniguez to name just a few. In fact, if you check out some of the kits that the Commencal-NOBL team have been rocking this year you’ll have an idea of what Únic is capable of. Custom anything generally comes with a higher price tag, but this is not the case with Únic kit. While it cannot be described as cheap, it’s certainly on par with other high-end clothing makers who don’t manufacture in Europe and also don’t allow for custom touches. Plus making clothes to order means less waste, which is better for the environment and always worth considering.

The Únic Signature trouser is the top of the range model. It sits above its Essential trouser and benefits from extra features such as an internal neoprene mobile phone pocket, and silicone waistbands to aid fit. Únic uses a very high-quality micro-adjust waist adjustment feature to fine-tune the fit of their trousers. For riders like myself who prefer a tighter fit, the ratchet offers that, but there is plenty of adjustment in the system, and stretch in the material to suit a looser fit or larger waist.

The 32in waist trouser fits me perfectly in the waist, and while the fit is a little more tailored than some, there are no irritating tight spots, and both zip pockets are large and very usable. Riders who like to carry keys, a wallet, a phone and a small tool on a short local blast will love the usable pockets and appreciate that the Únic Signature trouser doesn’t fall down or move while riding.

The tailored fit continues through the design of the legs with a narrower ankle area, which ensures there is no material flapping around near your chainset, and there is ample stretch in the material to easily accommodate knee pads.
