Issue 135 Cover โ€“ Pete Scullion

The master of the brooding sky and awesome light, Pete Scullion, brings us this issueโ€™s cover. With the rider perfectly timed and positioned in front of the sun โ€“ or is it a passing comet on a far flung otherworld where two suns offer perpetual daylight for the lucky mountain biking lifeforms?

Classic Ride โ€“ Reeth

The original idea for this Classic Ride was to try to find something as close as possible to Barnard Castle, for reasons we canโ€™t quite remember. Alas, things didnโ€™t quite work out that way, so instead Barney went to Reeth. Which is quite near to Barnard Castle. Nearer than London, anyway.

Peteโ€™s Pros โ€“ Jamie Edmondson

Getting dropped from the Seagraveโ€™s set up doesnโ€™t seem to have done Jamie any harm, having bagged an U21 EWS and an Elite DH podium this year. What will 2021 and beyond hold for this rising star?

Kit Essentials โ€“ Pumps

You need a pump. In fact, you probably want two โ€“ a big one for home and a little one for on the trail. Check out the pumps that keep us rolling and stop us feeling flat.

The Seatpost Guy

โ€œAnd here, at the slightest provocation, the quescents beasts shall rise, and it shall be the end for usโ€

Barney goes to visit The Seatpost Guy. If youโ€™ve forgotten to lube your seatpost, heโ€™s the guy you need โ€“ through some sort of sorcery he can remove your seatpost without damaging your frame. Barney takes various truth serums and spells with him on his quest to find out the secret thatโ€™s more closely guarded than the recipe for Coke.

Tour de Ben Nevis

Sanny has good reasons not to go to the top of Ben Nevis, but going round it doesnโ€™t seem like such a bad idea for a summerโ€™s day ride.

If At First You Donโ€™t Succeedโ€ฆ

The source of our cover image, and with enough glorious shots to adorn a whole year of magazine covers, Pete reflects on a route that kept defying him and weighs up whether itโ€™s better to give up when youโ€™re ahead, returning again (and again) another day.

New Year, New Bike?

Could testing look any colder?

We test three bikes from Ibis, Orange and Revel which are newly available on our shores. All in the โ€˜ride up and downโ€™ category. All in the โ€˜more than a little bit but less than a lot of travelโ€™ category. How do you choose when bikes are this good?

New Zealand Trucking

How do you get into the middle of nowhere, before heading off to the edge of nowhere on your bike? One option looks like you trade off effort and replace it with terror. Tony Hutcheson and Jamie Nicoll go exploring, New Zealand style.

Riding the Iron Curtain

With travel further afield off the menu, Markus Stitz takes a trip back to his childhood home of East Germany, for what turns out to be a thought provoking tour of this former borderland.

Riding Solo

After a year when group rides have been largely off the cards, Chipps explores the reasons why some people ride alone year in year out. Is it out of logistical need, mental necessity, or perhaps no one else shares their idea of โ€˜a good rideโ€™?

More than bikes, I like what bikes do. I think that they link people and places; that cycling creates a connection between us and our environment; bikes create communities; deliver freedom; bring joy; and improve fitness. They're environmentally friendly and create friendly environments.

  1. Thank goodness. I bought another well known UK Mountain Biking magazine this week because they had a free buff with a sheep printed on it. The buff’s good for nostalgia, the publication… well, let’s just say it’s not STW.

  2. Pdf is up now folks! Poor Mark – so far on his day off he has uploaded the mag to the site, built a bike for a feature, and taken bike boxes to the office. Hopefully tomorrow involves more drums and less work!

  3. Mine must be โ€œin the postโ€, like the cheque always is, There were 28 mountain bikes in the group meet on Saturday ( Isle of Mann)

  4. “Barney takes various truth serums and spells with him on his quest to find out the secret thatโ€™s more closely guarded than the recipe for Coke.”

    Is it Coke?

  5. @kjlmtber you should be able to get it now, I just had to learn some stuff to put it up, sorry for the delay!

@Jim_Trailrider I think the subs team have been in touch and you should be sorted now!

  6. Evening all. The pocketmag app is asking me to pay – anyone else having the same problem? Itโ€™s worked well in the past and I can still see previous issues in my library.

  7. iPad folks, Iโ€™m looking into it! Thought it had been sorted yesterday but it seems not and Iโ€™m trying to find out why the app wonโ€™t recognise you. Will put an update here once I hear back from the app people. Sorry for the delay in accessing all the goodness!

  8. Considering I am still missing issue 134 even after having been in contact with the subs support jan 14th I am not going to get my hopes up before 6-8 weeks from now. :/
Maybe magazines are hard to get into the EU now?
