Interbike 2016: More Obsessively-Built Tools from Silca

by 1

Given the success that Silca has seen with their ultra-premium hex set, it’s little surprise that the recently reborn pump company has gone on to broaden its trail and workshop offerings.

Portable Torque

The first and most notable is the T-Ratchet + Ti-Torque Kit.  The subject of a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, the TRTTK is a variously configurable ratcheting T-handle and torque wrench set.  The portable tool set slots nicely together to provide access and torque-indicating fastening for most any hardware on the bike.  Pre-selling for $98 (£75), the T-Ratchet + Ti-Torque Kit is scheduled to ship early in the new year.

Available in either nine- or thirteen-tool configurations, the Italian Army Knife is heavily-chromed for corrosion resistance.  But the truly clever bit is the pair of magnetic quick link holders which keep the little lifesavers close at hand (they can’t fall out once the tool is closed).  A snip at $25-£35 (£20-£27).

T-Handles of Love

Back in the workshop, the T-Handle Folio is a set of “heirloom quality” T-handled wrenches.  The long sections are single forged pieces while the sliding top sections have built-in end stops and a centre detent while the folio itself is sewn from Waxed Duck Canvas (their capitalisation) with a water-resistant and grippy Hypalon interior.  Buit for professional mechanics, the T-Handle is priced at $185 (£140).

Those ‘T’ bar keys look lovely but in a workshop environment they don’t stand up to any abuse, I know from experience that the small spring and ball bearing go AWOL quite quickly and you end up using an ‘o’ ring in the groove to stop ‘T’ part falling out.
