DirtySixer: Big Bikes For Tall People

by 1

We goggled at a concept 39er bike just a few weeks back, but DirtySixer make actual 36er bikes for very tall riders. Such as, Shaquille O’Neal:

They’re currently running a Kickstarter campaign, which is already fully funded.

The reason they’re using 36 inch wheels is proportionate sizing for tall riders. Shaq riding a 27.5 wheeled bike would probably look a little like me riding the bike of a small child, or Barney on a 26er (proportionate wheel sizing is the very reason Barney wants to throw 26 inch wheels in room 101). They’re not weeny rims either, 36 inch ones usually hail from mountain unicycling and a single rim will be designed to take the whole weight of a (average-ish) person by itself.

Of course, up (down?) to a certain point tallness isn’t obligatory for riding a 36er. You might just want to go up stairs:

David started mountain biking in the 90’s, by which he means “Ineptly jumping a Saracen Kili Racer off anything available in a nearby industrial estate”. After growing up and living in some extremely flat places, David moved to Yorkshire specifically for the mountain biking. This felt like a horrible mistake at first, because the hills are so steep, but you get used to them pretty quickly. Previously, David trifled with road and BMX, but mountain bikes always won. He’s most at peace battering down a rough trail, quietly fixing everything that does to a bike, or trying to figure out if that one click of compression damping has made things marginally better or worse. The inept jumping continues to this day.
