The first ever Beach Breaker took place on Sunday July 12th with more than 57 riders hitting the sandy dunes of North Devon.
Both mountain and fat bikers (fat as in the bike, that is) had to dig deep to complete the 24km course, stretched across the Braunton Burrows of South West England.
The event, paired with the Croyde Ocean Triathlon, is on course to raise a whopping £10k for its local charities.
Alex Dawson of Bike Motion Racing finished top of the pack in the Open category, with a time of 1hr 9m and 46s; earning himself the grand title of King of the Dunes. Pete Dawe of Soutfork Racing Team edged second place with James Bovey taking up the final podium place.
The Fat Bike Open saw Sam Pantling earn top spot- finishing in just 1hr 13m and 4s. He was also lucky enough to be drawn out to win a biking holiday for two in Morzine, France, which was donated by event sponsor, Alpine Elements.
Elbry Sandland of the Rocky Mountain Team took third with Mike Tomlinson of Southfork Racing team in front to claim the runners up spot.
The event director, Mike Morris, was understandably thrilled with how the day went: “The Beach Breaker event has been a huge success. The competitors have loved the challenge of the course and the terrain has really put them through their paces. Exhaustion and elation was the order of the day, and it was truly a magnificent spectacle. Feedback has been fantastic and we will shortly be announcing the date for next year’s race. It looks like this year battle between fat bikes and mountain bikes has been won by mountain bikes – but only by a mere three minutes.”
Beach Breaker will be back next year so be sure to keep tabs on their website if you fancy making money for charity and having fun whilst you do so.
