Tuesday Treats 114: 559 Bikes

Your once-a-week dose of retail therapy from Singletrack’s Premier Dealers, stockists and advertisers:

Tuesday Treats gives you a quality serving of independent bike retailing and a chance to win big in this week’s prize draw.

This week, we revisit 559 Bikes.

We’re headed south-west to Chepstow and dropping in on Sarah and her bike crazy team at 559 Bikes. They have been looking after Chepstow’s cycle enthusiasts for ten years now, with their Cyctech qualified crew and in exploring the trails on their doorstep, they offer an unrivalled knowledge of where to ride in the locality.

What’s changed since we last checked in?

We’re still doing what we do best, a one-stop-shop of the very best and friendly advice, retail and servicing. Our jointly sponsored (559 Bikes/Specialized) rider, Rickie Cotter has just finished 2nd at the WEMBO 24hr Endurance Championships at Fort William, maintaining the 24hr endurance racing roots of the shop. The rest of the team have also had a not too shaby race season (for old ladies anyway!)

Is there one unique selling point you guys want to shout about?

The shop is mainly staffed by girls with our token Saturday boy! We have found this encourages new women into cycling by avoiding perceived macho male shop image. Being able to personally advise on the pro’s and cons of gender specific products is a big advantage. You boys needn’t worry, we won’t bite and might even be able to give you a different take on where your next purchase is heading.

What products have been popular this summer?

The Genesis range of road bikes and Endura (Full Monty) gloves were going great guns, along with good ol boring innertubes but we’re seeing more people going over to tubeless with a little help from Stans and our workshop crew when needed.

What’s hot in store now?

The new Endura range for the winter has just landed. Sadly winter is on its way but it is a great excuse to invest in new cycle kit.

How are you getting on with the new wheel size?

I am loving the 27.5″ bikes. I now have a nice Specialized Stumpjumer EVO to go with my 27.5″ Genesis High Latitude.

Which product/brand does every staff member have on their bike?

Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. They offer the quickest pad change in the car park, without faff before a ride. The shop staff never get a chance to look at their bikes 😉

Planning ahead, what does 2015 look like?

We are looking to hold more demo days at Forest of Dean as the last one was so popular. Check in with us now on social media for updates.

What tea bags do you use?

Twinings Everyday (only the best will do).

Lastly, what do Singletrack Premier Subscribers get from you guys?

Premier Subscribers benefit from a rock solid 10 % off non discounted items.
