111 Men, Women and Children compete in the first round of Rollapaluza’s quest to find Britain’s “King of Spin” and “Queen of Cadence”. The winners and selected fastest riders will be inited to the Finals in London in early 2010.
Despite the heavy rain, 42 competitors took part in the morning session in the car park at Mud Dock aimed at the youth categories. There were some fine performances across all age groups from first-time roller racers and in some cases first-time cyclists.
The main event in the evening drew a crowd of hundreds to spectate, compete and drink, as with Rollapaluza’s last visit top Bristol the atmosphere was “enthusiastic” with plenty of good natured cheering from the the Bristol Fixed riders, the University bike club, plus cyclists from all disciplinefrom track to BMX and four cross.
In the men’s competition the top riders from the previous Bristol Rollapaluza, Marcus Mumford, Dan Bowen and Mud Dock employee Duncan Ferris were joined by newcomer professional BMX rider Rob Reed. In the end it was dan who took the win, possibly helped by the final being held over twice the distance at 1km.
In the female race Meggie Bichard looked dominant from the beginning and saved her fastest ride for the final against Kat Broomhall to take the win.
Mud-Dock, Fixie inc and Giro supplied the prizes.
Details of the next rounds of Rollapaluza’s National series in Wales, Manchester, Scotland, London and the South will be announced soon.
