MMA Sports, European Distributor for Sunline, today announced a voluntary recall of the SUNLINE V1 CARBON HANDLEBAR IN 31.8mm SIZE.
Hazard: The handlebar can crack or break, posing a possible fall hazard to the consumer. We have identified a potentially serious safety issue with the 31.8mm version of the carbon V1 handlebar.
Action: CONSUMERS SHOULD STOP USING THESE HANDLEBARS AT ONCE, remove them from the bike and return them to the store that they were bought from who will arrange for a refund.
Incidents: MMA Sports have received a small number of reports of handlebars cracking – particularly around the stem clamping area. None of these incidents have so far resulted in any injury to the rider.
Manufactured in: Taiwan
Sold by: Specialty bicycle retailers nationwide and via web sites with a SRP of £99.99.
Description: This recall involves Sunline V1 Carbon handlebars in the 31.8mm version ONLY, sold as individual aftermarket units. The handlebars are finished in a clearcoat gloss lacquer, showing the carbon weave construction of the bar. They have white Sunline printed logos, with ‘ VONE – 318 CARBON’ printed below. They also have white printed cut marks at each end of the bar, and a distinctive ‘grip tape’ finish in the stem clamping area.
We have determined that there is a potential for the handlebar to fail due to a possible fault in the manufacturing process. This is not a design fault, but a problem with the manufacturing and it is impossible to judge which handlebars are affected until they break.
Remedy: Consumers should stop riding these any bicycle fitted with these handlebars immediately and contact an authorised Sunline dealer for a refund.
Customers must stop using the handlebar and return it even if there are no visible signs of damage.
If you’ve bought this product for someone else or know someone who has one, please let them know about this recall as soon as possible.
Consumer Contact: Should you have any queries or concerns regarding this recall please call 01792 467 467 where our staff are happy to help. Lines are open from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Or contact via email: info@mmasports.com
MMA Sports would also like to stress the only model affected is the Sunline V1 Carbon 31.8mm carbon. No other models of Sunline handlebars are affected.
MMA Sports would like to take this opportunity to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by this recall. We will endeavor to carry out this recall quickly and with as little inconvenience as possible.

Bugger! These are (were) the best carbon bars I’ve used. Hopefully they come out with a replacement version soon.
i was going to buy some, but the guy in the shop warned me not to, due to ‘shoddy quality cntrol’ i’m glad i didnt now
I’ve killed 2. They have no clamp reinforcement which is why they crumble, another reason for their silly light weight!
So are the 25.4 bars still ok then?
if you read the warning it states “MMA Sports would also like to stress the only model affected is the Sunline V1 Carbon 31.8mm carbon. No other models of Sunline handlebars are affected.” Like one of those quizes for thick people where the answer is in the question
berni it may be a rhetorical question.
didn’t come across that way!
confirms my thoughts tupperware has no place on a mtb !
Awesome, I was gonna sell mine but now I should get the full cost back. Cushty.
I had some of these 6 months ago, they weighed 129 grams!!!. Thought something was wrong when nearly a third of the bars material (by weight) was missing but stupidly soldiered on with them.
Needless to say they lasted 2 rides. It was fantastic thinking of what mighta happened if they catastrophically failed. Anyway caught the problem and returned the bars for a refund.
Got very little sympathy or concern from the well known shop. They even offered a replacement but I pointed out I’d lost confidence in the Sunline manufacturing process and turned them down.
Very nice looking and comfy bars albeit poorly finished (got barbs in me fingers from end of bars too!). Shame really but more of a shame its taken 6 months to do anything. Shocking.
Still running carbon bars tho, FSA and Truvativ going strong after 3 & 2 years and have some nice Eastons to go on bike next. :o)
get a re-fund and get some renthals….problem solved
