I snapped the delicate bit off the top of my shadow XT mech and was wondering whether to get the old style one… but that got me thinking; because I ride in a mega rocky area how many times has my mech been saved by being tucked in a bit more than the normal one?
Any opinions?

tbh Its either me, or something about the Shadow ones that made it a pain to get the wheel in/out on my HT - gone back to old style, but XTR - but same price as XT Shadow.
last time i looked into buying a new rear mech there was no rapid rise option on the shadow mechs. that killed it for me.
The SLX Shadows shift really well..
however I am convinced that they are made of Cheese!
I was going to plumb for a saint one, but
price difference+availability x coefficient of smashing it off = no way!
If what they say about the spring tension (on the other thread) is right that could be a good thing, but I am still worried about breaking that tiny part that it hangs off again.
Might just try the old style one. Will report back when I smash that one off!
you do know that the fragile extra hanger is replaceable? Try the forum search tool someone has previously posted a link to a source in a similar thread.
I smashed my Shadow XT to bits this week..
Nothing would have withstood the rock blow it took!
Dont want to spend too much so planning on a Deore Shadow... good reviews and £27

Conventional rear mechs are to my mind superior. They come with a proper short cage, stay taught for longer and have better cable routing.
For some unknown reason the shadows come only in long and extra long cages, and I find when my mech does get bashed it's always on the cage, not the main body of the mech.
spokes- guess it depends where your frame runs its rear cable but with a seatstay cable run the shadow is far superior to a conventional in cable routing, the cable runs almost straight into the mech with no loop.
Agree though that any spurious rock-avoiding benefit has been totally lost by having such long cages which as you say is the bit that can catch a rock/stick.
It's not so much an issue of the frame as that big arm hanging down from the back of the mech for the cable clamp.
My mechs eventually die by getting too sloppy in the pivot. I think the wider conventional top pivot would last longer. That's why I stick with the conventional. Plus I've never been in the situation when 10 mm more clearance would have saved the day.

I prefer conventional mechs. THe dangly bit on the shado is thicker than my hanger. Grates a bit when my XTR mech broke and left the £15 hanger in tact.
Shadow mechs are shit.
I've busted more of then than I ever have conventional ones. They are a real barsteward to set up, and don't provide such a slick gear change.
Go conventional.

I've got 3 XTR shadows, definately recomended. Cable routing is the big plus, none of that huge loop out the back to attach itself to the heather. Can't tell any difference shifting wise.
Only problem is price, XTR shadows are £silly, but two of mine were from the classifieds, cheaper than a new conventional XT one.
